Hello everyone,I am looking for a Bertoia Diamond chair in black for my living room. I have found an old Bertoia Diamond dating the 50s in quite a good condition (just some normal use minor scratches in the coating). The chair has been always used inside a house, never outside.I have read that the original coating is a kind of plastic called "Rilsan". As long as the chair is 60 years old, do you know if this kind of coating, if used with care, does keep its mechanical properties after so many years?I can not see in person the chair. Could it be that Rilsan gets fragile with age and it is easier to crack, mark or break it? Does it keep its original adherence to the iron wire?I am sure there are several owners of 50s - 60s Bertoia Diamonds that can enlighten me with their experience...Thank you in advance for your replies!Raúl
On the very early chairs, the Rilsan coating was only used for white parts and the black had a black oxide finish (hardly any finish at all).
rills baskets can show cracks over time (especially those used outdoors for any length of time). For indoor chairs, it's not uncommon to find small hairline cracks in the Rilsan coating from the repeated flexing of the basket.
