.
But what to do with the partially stripped one? I'd try the indian ink or another black stain, lightly sand the rest of them and get them all resprayed with a compatable clear coat and hope it looks ok...there are some black furniture waxes available which might with repeated application over time smooth any discrepancy in tone out.
If it was my project I'd have kicked myself to death about now.

It does look to me like the upholstery is original, as there is just no evidence of any prior upholstery that I can see. And yes, the paint is under the upholstery without getting onto the fabric, so it could not have been done with the upholstery in place. Hopefully the manufacturer will get back to me.
This morning I put my university oil painting degrees to use (for a change) and mixed up a black stain for the place I sanded down to bare wood, and then mixed some of the same heavily pigmented stain with some clear lacquer, and went over the top of that area after I had stained it. I had some luck, and honestly can't see any difference between it and the other chairs. Like the other chairs, the black finish is tight and shows all of the wood grain, and no brush strokes, and also has the exact same sheen. And because it was lacquer, it was dry in 10 minutes. I also went over the place on the legs that a prior person had tried stripping. But yeah, it would have been nice had I not done it in the first place.

If the chairs originally had a cord seat there would be hundreds of nail holes from the fasteners used it secure the cord underneath. And I believe the seat frames are also different.

I just came across another black Moller chair set for sale, about 100 miles from me. It also includes a Moller table, all in black lacquer. The upholstery color/type looks the same as mine. I have not heard anything back from Moller about their use of lacquer.

I am kind of wondering what a set like this would look like with the black paper-cord seats that Moller offers as an option. I do not care for the high contrast between the light fabric and the black. Am I the only one who gets a kind of 80's vibe from this combination? Anyway, if I can figure out a way to come about some, I may do up my chairs in black paper-cord.

black paper cord sources
We had this discussion here awhile back and I seem to remember that no one could find a source for black paper cord. I just found this one, which may not have been available before. It's in the UK, though---and this stuff is heavy so even if they ship internationally, it's gonna cost you.
I'm tempted to get some. I have connections in Denmark and my husband goes there now and then, but lugging it back in his suitcase is probably just as expensive as shipping, what with the new luggage fees and all.

Spanky, thanks for that lead. I am pretty certain I will be doing up the four chairs I have using black cord at some point.
I am half tempted to take a look at this set of six chairs and the table, and would already have bought it were it teak, or if I did not already have a Moller set in teak. The seller told me they have no doubt their set was painted at the factory. It is $750 for the set...

Iv`e used Marshall for my Danish cord needs Spanky.
It is the real deal, very good quality stuff but very heavy when ordered on a large roll, they also do the L shaped nails.

I wonder if Frank's Cane and Rush Supply could get the black paper cord? It might be worth asking. They sell paper rush in black and a few other colors but paper rush isn't the same as paper cord---no plies, doesn't wear as well.

Just for kicks, I used Photoshop to add a cord seat (from one of my teak chairs) to one of these black chairs, in natural cord, and then tried as best I could to make it appear as a black cord seat would. I guess I actually can't tell which I like best.

Geez -- nice !
Wish I could do photoshop -- I might give up building furniture (or even models) altogether. . .
Looks good. Of the two, I really like the all-black one. The other suffers only by comparison; the front legs seem divorced from the back ones, making it seem like the whole thing might fall apart ? Not much of a complaint -- but the all-black is perfection !

I like both. But if you...
I like both. But if you have black chairs, even if natural cord looks better to many, perhaps one should still just go all out, and have chairs that are just plain Black altogether. So, I am thinking I like the patina of old natural cord with the black chairs, but in the end I would probably go with black just for the sake of the novelty.

I guess I like black now, as I just put a hold on the set of 6 with the table. I will probably be picking it up tomorrow. After I fix it up and replace the seats, I may put it on extended loan to my mom, since I may not have room for it.

As I had got those six other black chairs today, they did not leave much doubt that they were finished in black by Moller. The paper tags are still in place on the seat upholstery. All 10 of my chairs have the same black fabric tape trim, secured with specially painted black staples. There is no doubt in my mind that Moller offered these #75 chairs in black lacquer at some point. No idea if they still do or not, and no idea why the only examples I have seen online thus far have been on Craigslist, a few miles from my house.
