I have been interested in possibly purchasing one of the France and Sons daybed that have the caning on the sides (and sometimes on the back). I have only ever seen pictures of these pieces. I have never seen one available locally. How comfortable are these sofa/daybeds? This would actually be a piece that would be used so comfort as well as looks is important. Also, would the caning be a problem with cats? Would the caning be too much temptation for them to claw at? I do keep their nails trimmed but they still have claws...just no sharp tips. Would trimmed cat claws still be a no-no with this sofa because of the caning?
Also, does anyone have any other sofa suggestions in similar style (caning is not a must). I like sofas with a fair bit of wood (teak, walnut, etc). Not a huge fan of sofas that are all upholstery. I also like sofas with a bit of a sculptural quality to them. I am willing to pay for a nice piece but I don't want to go hugely excessive on price. I'd like to not pay more then $2000. So with this price range, does anyone have suggestions?
I have
the Minerva set, by Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard also made by France & Sons
There is no caning to temp your cat
(i'm not a cat owner, but many of the regular posters are, and can probably better advise you on your concerns)
I find it comfortable enough. Not sure of the prices in the US though!
.
I am not sure which F&S sofa you mean, but I have the "grete jalk" three seater with upholstered arms. And I find it comfortable enough as well, to borrow a phrase from Robert.
And it is gorgeous, especially the teak back. And if you want more teak, there is an easier to find very similar Jalk with teak arms.
Robert: I am jealous of your sofa. I have the minerva side tables and want the complete set...
.
Well, actually there is no reason to be jealous because I sold it already last year, it's gone.
That's the "tragedy" of a retailer existence, very often I'm saying to myself, okay for this time I will keep this wonderful piece for my living room, but ... you know, there is always a customer who thwarts my plans, it's not fair! 🙂
So there is a permanent change of furnishing at home, at the moment I have a wonderful Bastiano suite by Tobia/Afra Scarpa in rosewood and black leather, just fantastic and I swear solemnly I never will sell it but ... you know ... the tragedy will continue!
Cloudburst,
I have a Grete Jalk three seater similar to Leif's but without the armrests. It has been my principle sofa for a few years. I can attest to it's beauty...in real life it's gorgeous.
Comfortable enough is a good description to use for these pieces. The seat depth is narrower than a conventional plushy sofa, which makes them smartly compact, but does also make them less comfortable, in the sense they are difficult to flop on and get cozy.
Hard to see that Minerva set... I missed out on the complete set including the corner table for less than $300. I was the second caller, I am usually always the second caller...
A local shop has a Minerva...
A local shop has a Minerva sofa available. I like the looks of the sofa much better in pictures. For some reason, I find the metal attachments for the arms a bit off-putting in person. I still like the sofa but the metal pieces bug me. I do like those Greta Jalk sofas. They are another sofa that I have been toying around about getting. I really like sofas with caning but am unsure with my cats. I haven't had any problems with them clawing furniture in the past, but I fear that caning might look a bit too much like those clawing things (whatever they are called) that I have for the cats.
A possibility
The cane in that Hvidt sofa was probably not hand woven in place. It looks like the kind of cane sold in sheets. So, should the cats decide to claw it, it would be a significantly cheaper repair than is usually meant by "re-caning" in the context of Danish chairs. For example Frank Supply sell that sort of cane (link below). You'd also want to make sure you can get into the cane without destroying the upholstery too.
I am not sure if I would risk losing the original cane, but I think it bears mentioning that the risk might be less than you would expect.

Onno
I see you used three cushions to replace the single cushion. Did you find they separated at all (despite the arms and table there) or were they tied together somehow?
Am I wrong or were the back cushions also different than the originals - slightly shorter and wider.
I'm assuming you replaced the sprung cushions with foam - do you recall what density of foam you used?
Sorry for all the questions - I have a set that needs to be refreshed and the original sprung cushions are shot.
