What a delightful chair! I can see where you would call it a quasi-grasshopper. My first thoughts were Ralph Rapson or Bruno Mathsson, but google turned up no matching images. I ruled out Risom, because I haven't seen him use the bent ply method, but rather more traditional construction techniques....
I have actually seen an early example of the grasshopper that employs the use of webbing. I wonder if it could be an earlier experiment ... although it still reminds me more of Rapson.
I guess I am rambling, sorry I am of no real help. I'll keep looking. I have a feeling I have seen it before...
Hi, this is my chair!
Hi all,
First, thanks to SDR for uploading the pics of this chair for me. I forgot to check here until now. I wanted to let everyone know I still have no idea what this chair is, but I did see another one in a book of the work of A. Quincy Brown in a house from 1949 (I can find the exact house if that would help). I was very excited to see that, as I would think it being from the late 40s makes it more interesting than a later Grasshopper "afterthought". I bought it from a very reputable dealer in Houston and she didn't know much about it except that she came across it with a lot of other furniture and had to have it. I believe the apholstery is original Gerard. The cushion buttons for easy removal and cleaning. It's a great chair. It would be even greater if I could call it by name!
