Why can I grab all the objects on the web page and drag them around the screen, but not drop them where I want them? When I try dropping them, they dutifully migrate back to their origin like homing pidgeons.I know DA is not unique in the regard. All websites behave this way.
It seems an odd feature to build into web sites.
It would be kind of freeing and fun to allow the personalizing of the design of DA with simple drags and drops. And maybe have a button that says "Return to Default Design."
So I guess my question is: why was mark-up language written to allow this effect, if it is not used?
As a web designer...
You're not actually dragging and dropping anything. You're using the drag and drop file system that is part of the operating system and the browser, not the actual website. You are picking up an image and allowing it to be dragged to your desktop and saved, just as you would move around any text file, mp3 or picture that is on your hard drive. The kind of programming that would have to go into a website (especially one that's database driven and constantly changing such as DA) to allow for drag and drop design customization would just be ridiculously complex, if not impossible. With the advent of full-screen Flash and Ajax, I guess it's possible but I doubt any web designer would consider it worth the enormous effort.
