Hi,
I have recently bought six eames shell chairs on ebay. Now the glue that holds the small item you screw the base of the legs into are slipping on all the chairs. I have tried to re-glue, but not with any luck. Can anyone tell me what to do?
Regards
Katrine

Hi Katrine,
What kind of glue are you using to attach the shock mounts to the shell? The only way they are sliding is because the glue has not cured. If the glue you are using is oil based, it could be "melting" the shockmounts and thats why they won't stay. I used just a standard 2-part epoxy to reglue the mounts on my side shell. Anyone else with suggestions?

The shell chair restoration...
The shell chair restoration guide at http://chairfag.com/?p=3 recommends JB Weld epoxy. I have seen it on the shelf in my local hardware store.

JB Weld Works!
Yes, JB Weld works great. I've tried a couple of different epoxies, but they didn't hold well. Cleaning and roughening of the surface, and positioning of the mounts are very important as well. Good luck!

Hi,
Thank you very much for your advices. Could I ask you to see if the shock mounts are positioned correct on our chairs?
Yours sincerely
Katrine

Wide mount
Your shell has the wide shock mount pattern, and it looks like that is a reproduction base that is designed for the wide pattern. If you want to keep it like that, just glue the loose mounts back to their original positions.

Possible...
I just don't think the wide mount pattern is very conducive to this base... The dowel base was already prone to breaking in its original design.

final solution to the adhesive question
Do not ues a standard hardware store adhesive. The "best of the best" is the 3M? Scotch-Weld? Epoxy Adhesive DP190. This is more than likely the OEM product that Herman Miller uses in manufacturing. 3M products are specific to the substrate. Not one size fits all.

Shell Shock Mounts
For more than a decade we have been installing our original style neoprene shock mounts on both the fiberglass and plywood series Eames chairs.
These are not the crap polyurethane mounts that are being sold elsewhere.
All our shock mount installations come with a 4 year warranty. On the other hand if you would like to DIY we can sell you the parts for the job.
