Can any one point me in the right direction in funding a reliable link or lituature on pre 1964 Barcelona Knoll chairs? Im trying to see if this chair is a early knoll internatianl or a knockoff.
There is no manufacturing markings on the steel or the underside of the leather cushions. 8 leather straps for the back of the chair and 9 for the seat. X 20 single squares with pipping per cushion with material with buttons on the back side of the bottom seat and leather on the back side back seat . This chair is extremely heavy and has no signs of welding. The frame appears to be a bent flat steel constructrion. It IS NOT Stainless steel....Its Chrome. It looks aged but who really knows lol Any help would be appreciated
thanks
P 🙂

Well,
I don't think that it's Knoll, as Knoll would not have offered chrome plated steel at that time, and the frame would have been 1 piece construction. Also, the method of attaching the cushion's to the straps is not the same as a Knoll version. But it sure looks good.
Best,
Aunt Mark
ps not sure where to get the link.
pss I'm usually wrong.
Hi Aunt Mark
I thought the same with the Chrome until I read the article below...
"Knoll took on its earliest production in 1947 as a chrome-plated steel version after an initial experiment in aluminum failed. The Knoll production was the first in the United States but not the only one. In the early 1950s the first examples of the Barcelona chair produced in Chicago appear. These revered and considered examples were produced by Gerry Griffin and commissioned by Mies for several of his buildings in Chicago. These were also the first to utilize stainless steel, a material that Mies stated he would have used from the beginning had the technology be available to him. Knoll did not create their version in stainless steel until 1964.

So this is why i was thinking pre 1964 if in deed it is a knoll. But as you say the attchemnt to the cushions don't appear like knolls.
I will add some pics of the cushions to see if any one recognise it along with the bottom seat straps
Hello miss p.
I understand that the Design w/in Reach chrome Barcelona chair frame is also not a one piece construction. What are the measurements of your chair? I believe that my Barcelona chairs are pre 1964, as they were in my fathers office (built just prior to that)...and they are stainless. Hopefully somebody knows more than myself.
Best,
Aunt Mark
(edited to show a snappy of how the cushions on a Knoll Barcelona are attached.)
miss p,
I suggest you contact Knoll East Greenville for a definitive answer to your question. An email is your best solution.
Customers and "friends of Knoll" come first. This translates to you may have to wait for a reply as questions that do not relate to a positive revenue stream are answered last.
Guessing and speculation is boring. Take pride in executing the remainder of your "homework" silently and reporting back with an answer. Best of luck.
