Norm's chair above is indeed beautifully translucent. And yes Heath, many of the Zenith shells really are like that. That photo has nice light coming in from behind, but is no exaggeration at all.
I have included an example of a yellow (or parchment?) 2nd generation Venice shell that is much less translucent than Norms. (The one with Henry sleeping)
The Sea Foam Green shells from my old "Eames buffet" pic are quite definitely NOT translucent. I set up these shells to show the vast range of colors that all come under the label of "Seafoam Green". I happen to believe the range in color is due to both environmental conditions AND intentional color batch tinkering by Ray, and of course age.
The faded Red shells also have quite a lot of the same translucent quality as Norm's shell does, when placed in certain lighting situations. But I have one like Norm's above, and to me, that early golden-yellow and the lemon yellow ones are the most transparent. (They also might both be the same color originally, but I find that hard to believe.)
It's funny to see how many ebay sellers will attest to the "beautiful translucency" of their Sea Foam shells, simply because they have heard about SOME of the Zenith's being translucent.
What lovely shells!
Norm, that chair looks to be lick-able...my god that's sweet. And EamesHead, those are simply gorgeous, love the color. How generous of Ray to accessorize the tabletop. And woody, consider changing your user name to "shellyshell".
Impressed am I,
Your Aunt Mark
yeah woody
I like the stacks of side shells too. Side shells stack WAY nicer than armshells do.
Do you ever just do a big single stack and have it around your house, kind of like a sculpture?
Thanks Mark. (I edited!!!) You can't have him. I have to draw the line somewhere. Anything else you can have, but not Henry.
Besides, he's BEIGE.

Yes, I have thought about displaying my side shell collection like that... maybe when I have a bit more space to do it. Right now I just keep them in a closet.
Mark, I do not recommend you try to lick a Zenith shell. You may end up with a mouthful of glass fibers.
I know Lunchbox has quite a stash of shell chairs as well. And of course Pegboard has numerous museum quality examples. Can't forget about Joshua F either.

Here is my 2 gen zenith. The original
x-base broke at a bolt hole opening and after having it fixed only lasted about a year before it broke again so I picked up a low lounge aluminum shell chair base that from a local college here in my town. Its quite low and have only seen 1 other base like it
Another thing I like about the zenith shell chairs is how big the fiberglass staws are.
