Come across a chap selling these stools...
Claims to be Prouve... looks like Prouve... is it Prouve?
He's asking £850 each for them, a lot to part with but would love to own a piece of Prouve. Anyone know how to spot a real one and are they worth it?

Not Prouve
*edit*
On second inspection it appears that there are 2 slightly different chairs attributed to both Olsen and Prouve. Im guessing Olsen was inspired by Prouve? Or vise versa?

Well that hasn't really...
Well thats just made things a little more complicated.l. Many thanks for the heads up on Odelberg Olsen (killer name!). Wasn't aware of him or his designs.
A brief flick through google and it seems both chairs are attributed to Olsen and Prouve... possibly the rounded back one more so to Olsen.
Does anyone know anything more about Olsen? Where is he from and and where were his designs distributed. There are four of the chairs and they are in Belgium so I would have thought it is more likely they are Prouve.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news....
A long time ago I was bidding on one of these "Prouvé" task chairs on eBay, back when you could see your user IDs. One of my dealers in France recognized my user ID and warned me to cancel my bid because in fact, this chair was not Prouvé at all. Apparently every serious Prouvé collector in France was aware if this, but no one really says anything because it's big money to those willing to take advantage of the uneducated, (kinda like Sol Fingerhut's "prototype" Eames armshell). He told me that if I doubted him, to contact the Galerie Patrick Seguin for confirmation.
So I did, emailing them the photo of the chair.
This was the reply:
"On october 15th you requested information regarding a falsely attributed Jean Prouvé chair. I am sorry to not have been able to get back to you earlier with a reply.
despite being published in the Taschen book on Jean Prouvé and in the Feill's 1000 chairs this chair is not by Jean Prouvé. The confusion arises from the fact that it was published in the periodical "Architecture Aujourd'hui" in June 1947 on the same page with many other Prouvé pieces. However, in this periodical, it is attributed as follows: NORDISKA KOMPANIET Stockholm.
I hope this is useful.
Best Regards,
Frances Perkins
Galerie Patrick Seguin"
I hope you didn't buy the chair yet!
It's not Prouve, but it is...
It's not Prouve, but it is Odelberg Olsen, and does have value. In fact, about a year ago I found the same chair locally for a few hundred dollars, although in better shape, and wasn't sure what it was and posted it on here for help but nobody knew. After a little more research I found out it was Odelberg Olsen for Knoll and definitely worth more than $300, but by that time someone had already snatched it up. I just saw one at the modern auction in LA, and it was estimated at several thousand dollars. However, I believe it went unsold. I think that estimate was much too high.
Wow! News to me...
Well that's got to be the most broadly used false attribution I can think of. And strange as it really fits into the Prouve catalogue, or it wouldn't have been featured amongst his work I guess.
I've had the opportunity to purchase one on a couple of occasions but price curbed my enthusiasm both times. What a relief in retrospect.
Makes me curious about this Olsen as it really is a lovely and very well conceived design.
Nice one peeps... helped me...
Nice one peeps... helped me make my mind up. Great looking chair and would probably go for it if the price was a bit lower.
I heard a good rumour the other day along the same lines... have a feeling it might be true.
Was speaking to a small dealer in Holland the other day who told me that the Charlotte Perriand "Les Arcs" chairs and stools were not actually designed by her.
Apparently she liked them and used them for a photoshoot in Les Arcs but they were in fact produced by a small company in Leuwarden in Holland.
The dealer was from Leuwarden and said a friend of his had the catalogue with the chairs and stools in. Might explain why the chairs are so bloody uncomfortable and why there are so many of them knocking around in Holland.
