I have very little experience of HM furniture so apologies if this is an easy one.

my the question is this...

Is this a DAF 5 or some other version of it ?

Was it offered in this base or might this be a marriage ?

Thanks in advance.

Killian.

Marriage
That's not a DFH, nor is it a DAF (the DAF has the swaged legs). I have searched extensively and can find no evidence that the Nelson fiberglass chair was ever offered with a standard H base. In addition to the swag leg base, the Vitra book says that it was sold with a swivel base (the Eames universal contract base?) and also the LaFonda base, but I've never seen either version and suspect that those may have been only offered on European production.
A good close look at the shock mounts and any indentations from bases might be revealing.

The upside down y in the C appears to be Century Plastics.

Yes, Cincinnati
I would remove the base and look for indentations in the shock mounts as Pegboard suggested.
Very nice looking shells, regardless.

No, Century Plastics is correct...
They made Nelson fiberglass chairs as well as Eames shell chairs from the late 50's to mid 60's.
Cincinnati Milicron's designation is a C with inlayed star.

Killian...
The one you found with the legs traveling up the sides of the chair under the arms most likely is a DFH. I'd have to see photos to confirm. They're very rare and quite quirky.
I'd also be interested in the markings on the shockmounts of your set of four.

Hi Lunchbox,
Sadly they are not mine, a friend sent me the images from an auction today. The DFH I found online was on the wright 20 site... see below.
It would seem from the feedback I'm getting that its a good set of shells sitting on the wrong bases.
If he buys the chairs and I get to see them I will post a photo of the shockmounts.

I'd be very interested in seeing that catalogue shot. All I've been able to find are these from 1958-1961.
I have one of the DFH/ DH5. The Vitra book on Nelson cites it as DFH (and DFH 5 with the upholstered seat). Apparently, the "5" was added to any of the names if it was ordered with the optional seat pad. They list the other swag leg variations correctly: DAF, MAF, DAA, MAA.
It would be interesting to know for sure the correct name or designation of this wacky, cool chair. To me it's kind of like a duck billed platypus, sorta homely, a bit of a mash up, but ultimately very endearing. I assumed it was designed for the contract market where they thought people might worry about the stability of the light swag leg version, but it actually has a lower height than the DAF & DAA, it's closer to the MAF & MAA which is designed to be a more conversational height like the SAX. Not quite a lounge chair, but more relaxed than a dining or desk height. I actually find it very comfortable and I like that the beefier base allows me not to worry about stressing the chair when I use it.
