Hi,
I'm helping a local collector sell some of stuff, and I'm just a bit unsure about this chair. He purchased a pair of them a few years back from a London auction house. He says they are Ponti chairs, for Cassina, very rare with arms and possibly the wood is apple. Can anyone confirm any of this? Any additional info would be great. Thank you.
Stew

Not Ponti expert myself,
. . . but looks like a decently-made knockoff of the Superleggera. Two quick tells are: 1) the seat should not overhang on the front, and 2) there should not be a front rail below the seat.

upon further comparison,
. . . this framing looks clunkier and the proportions are different.

A local auction house had a lot a couple of months ago listed as Gio Ponti dining chairs. The lot went for quite a high price. It only took a 1-2 minute google search to accurately determine that they were in fact Carlo di Carli chairs for M Singer and Sons. While still a nice design and valuable chairs, the buyer was adamant afterwards that they were Ponti. I'm always surprised how much people are willing to shell out without doing their homework.

Thank you. I've had a good look, and can't seem to find anything similar by Carlo di Carli. Is there a link you can post?

It was a different chair design than yours. I only brought it up as an example of an auction house misidentifying a chair as a Ponti.

.
My mind may be inventing things but wasn't there a progenitor to the superleggera? That it was actually a redesign of a previous chair of his.

The superleggera
Was a redesign of the leggera which was a redesign of descalzi's chiavarina.
Here are another couple of "leggera" armchairs just like the OP's. The ponti attribution is unsupported, and seems not to have inspired very high prices as they sold for the opening bid. (At 1000 euro per chair though, that's not bad considering the complete lack of documentation and the sketchy attribution).

Funny!
Based on the grain patterns on the back rest slats I am pretty sure the OP's chair it the same exact chair as the one on the left in the photo from the German auction.
The collector must be the most current holder of these two hot potatoes.

Thank you for all this info....
Thank you for all this info. Really helpful. I always understood (maybe wrongly) that the chairs main design feature was being very light. Hence the promo photo of it being lifted simply with one arm. So adding arms to it, and extra weight, seemed a little odd. But oh well.
