I have a restored plycraft chair but the ottoman is just the base and exterior wood base. There was not anything else with it. I am assuming that there should be a piece of bent plywood to put the foam on so i can reupholster it. My question is am I correct? If so, where can i find a piece of bentwood that would work? Are there any places online to purchase or any awesome DIY. I am relatively handy with woodwork but wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions before diving in.
Thanks,
Nathan
yes you need this piece
for upholstery.
Here is a quick picture of the bottom.
The wood under the upholstery is approx. 1/4" thick, so you will need to get 2-3 thin sheets and bend and glue to conform to the curve of the interior (bottom) wood. Use your existing ottoman shell as a mold then cut the thin sheets a little larger than needed, keep in mind the bend on each side for accurate measurement .
Home depot carries a thin sheet (4' x 8') called a "door skin", this might work or try a specialty wood worker type store that carries veneer and just buy the cheapest stuff.
So pre-clamp it all up for flex and fit, then remove and use strong wood glue or epoxy on all surfacs, reclamp to ottoman base. Be sure to cover base in a sheet of plastic to prevent a glue mess and use padded blocks on all clamps to prevent any marring or damage to underside of ottoman, after drytime remove clamps and trace ottoman shape on the wood for cutting and decrease by 1/4" to allow room for new upholstery.
Good luck and yes it might be easier to spend $50 on another complete ottoman.
