Hello,
we just got a new Cado for a big empty wall between our living and dining rooms. We've just begun learning about design and mid century modern furniture in particular, so please bear with me! (Also, please ignore most of the other furnishings you see... like I said, we've just discovered this world over the past few months)

So, we have a Cado royal system in teak with a woven-front desk that drops down, I don't know how I'm going to narrow down all the fabulous chairs there are - I'm hoping you can help me! We are in a craftsman bungalow (that the previous owners remuddled in home-depot-Victorian style...unfortunately)so too much metal or to Panton-ish would probably be jarring. The warmth of the Danish wood pieces does work well, however. But how to choose?

I'm on a budget - I'd like to stay under $500 - but I'm happy to see outrageously priced pieces for inspiration. But whether over or under budget, I'd love to see pictures - ebay items, Craigslist items, etc. that work please link them here!

(Disclaimer: I have some books I've looked through, but I'd love a Design Addict's personal consultation!)

One more thing
If you think we should configure the shelves differently, I'd love to hear suggestions on that as well. Obviously we haven't loaded it up yet - just got it mounted this weekend.
We'll probably put a vintage clock somewhere on there.
And we're trying to find a chair that is fairly comfortable to sit in of course - something that we pull out for guests (if our oversized, overstuffed sectional can't handle anymore!) - I like stools but might not be great for that purpose.

I personally love
I personally would love to see an upholstered Eames shell chair on a pivot base - but without the casters. The casters make the chair seem restless. The shape of the chair is very organic, and you can find decently upholstered shells for fairly cheap on eBay and Craigslist. A side shell could set you back 30-80$, an armshell 60-200$, and a base 20-50$. The shells are very comfortable, come in a huge range of colors/upholsteries. And if you get a deal on a badly upholstered shell I think you could find someone here to handle recovering it. 😀

Looks great!
I don't have a chair suggestion, offhand; but your system seems configured a bit too high, to me-- perhaps move all the elements down a few notches?
Also, the left side seems a bit unbalanced-- perhaps move the middle bottom shelf to the left, thus visually balancing things and making the built-in heating duct thingy less of a focal point.

It looks very nice but I...
It looks very nice but I would have to go with Simon on this one. The system is simply mounted too high. I would probably have placed it, so the four wooden poles "rested" directly on top of the white panels or if not then 5-10 cm. above them.
I would also consider moving one of the shelfs to the bottom left, so you had a sort of bottom line acting as a fundament for the organized chaos of the remaining shelves and cabinets.

Modern looks best when it's low-slung
I was going to suggest lowering the standards, too; but feared the suggestion too cruel, since it was just mounted.
(What's another hour and a few swipes of spackle, in pursuit of beauty...)

I was afraid of that...
Darn, I was wondering if we had mounted it too high.... I'm wondering no more ;P But thanks for your helpful comments and excellent points - I'll see what hubby is up for.
We will have the spackle and paint out anyway removing these painted foam Victorian ceiling medallions from which the "crystal" chandeliers are hanging (not for long).
Thanks for the Eames chair recommendation, LS.
Any others out there?
Thanks again, all!

Desk height
Warrigal, you need to buy a dining or office height chair to go under the Cado drop-front desk. Rule out all chairs described as "lounge" chairs. Once you buy the chair, you will know the exact height to mount the desk. (The other shelves are at your own discretion). I don't know if I'm on board with Lucifersum. That streamlined Eames chair might look too informal in an Arts & Crafts Bungalow living room.
Look how pretty this Finn Juhl chair is with that shelf configuration:

i own a few chairs and I think swans by Arne Jacobsen would look nice as would Panton cones,
If on a budget
check out a Eames lafonda with a Girard fabric would look nice
I have the Cado system just like yours with out the cane and i use them in my office and have them up high and have two Barcelonas under them and love them they a re perfect for that space.

With a secretary style desk, such as yours...
the chair is parked at the desk only when it's open, in use. Where's the chair to reside when it's not open, then?
If you move one of the center shelves to the left, you'll have a 'space' in the middle where the chair can live when the desk's not in use.
I agree with Riki-- a wood framed chair seems ideal. Would a caned wood chair be just right, or too 'matchy'? Hmm...
P.S. If your husband indulges you, and lowers the standards, you should shoot for the standard tops to be parallel with the door frames.

Great ideas!
Thanks so much for all your thoughts!!
Riki, I absolutely LOVE that chair. Actually, there is a store local to me that has two of the Diplomte chairs - one w/black leather and the other with brown. I had saved those in my "favorites."
I think I agree with you and William Holden Caulfied re preferring a wood-framed chair in a craftsman bungalow. While I really like the cleanness of the shell chairs, I just think they wouldn't complement *this* house as well as a wood-framed chair.
LRF - I LOVE the way you have your Cado set up - very cool! I might incorporate that and make a "space" for my chair if it works. I like it.
--also, I do LOVE the Panton cone chair - although very out of my budget right now. That they could work aesthetically with the Cado hadn't occurred to me at all - but thats why I come here! Thanks!
WHC - good question re where the chair will live. I had been thinking it would be pulled up to the desk (even when folded) and that I'd be looking at the back of the chair a lot (since the sectional couch faces that wall). I was assuming I'd have to find a fairly low-back or open backed chair so that it wouldn't be too obtrusive.
However, I really like the idea of moving a shelf and making a space for it. That way the chair could face into the room instead of turn its back on it.
I also wondered about a cane chair. I've posted one below that I like...
Let me know what you think of the below chairs - am I on the right track or way off base?!:
1) Moller cane chair (prob. out of my price range, but...)
2) Dyrlund chair
3) no-name orange chair

The orange chair..
...sort of reminds me of this Wegner chair, which I also really like but this one is out of my price range...

Moller
You can find Moller chairs for ~$100 with a bit of luck. Personally, I prefer #71.
You can't really go wrong with shell chairs either.

ROYAL SYSTEM
Hi Warrigal
The system you have there is variant by Poul Cadovious known as the ROYAL system.
The brass supports is what differs from the all wood supports on the CADO system.
But thats just a small point
As mentioned by others, the set is too high.
The idea of the big cabinets are to have them at the same height as a sideboard / credenza roughly 80-82cm 31-31½ inch from top to floor. Then taper the shelves from deep to shallow at the top so you dont get the feeling of the system toppeling over.
As for chairs.
Cado did do a chair to go with the CADO system kalled EVA.
Teak with papercord seat. would lokk great.
You can even, if really lucky, get a designated table that sits in the uprights but in 20 years of dealing I have only ever had 1

thanks for the comments
hopefully I'll find a bargain somewhere - but since I'm still learning it's hard to recognize a bargain, say, on craigslist. we'll see! I'm not in a hurry.
The second cabinet on the shelving unit is actually a glass front display cabinet (we havent put the glass doors on yet) - so it would seem this should be set higher, out of the way, rather than credenza level, no?
Oh, I should mention that one reason we have the left side shelf higher is that we're a little worried about putting a shelf over that heating vent - is that justified? We live in southern CA so we don't have the heat on too high or too often, but still paranoid about doing undue harm to a shelf byhaving it too close. However, feel free to dispell my fears on that!
thanks again...
