Hi All,
I just bought a pair of these stunning 1950's perforated metal and brass wall sconces and I was wondering if anybody in the DA community could please help me iD the lamps.
They are in original condition except that someone has attached power cords so that they could use them as lamps. Each lamp takes 2 light globes and they have Bakelite fittings. The lamps are approx 40cm tall and approx 15cm wide.
I have searched google and the lamps are very much in the European style. The lamps were recently purchased in Australia and they are not like any 1950's Australian light fittings I have ever seen, but they do have bayonet fittings which suggests that they may be made in Australia.
Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Tick.

French? Australian?
Your wall sconces are very similar to mine , which are solid copper sheet with some small punched holes where yours are perforated black metal. Mine are brass elsewhere. Bought in Tasmania, and judging by the size of them, probably from a commercial interior[ hotel foyer etc]. A similar one appears in an Australian magazine of the 1950s but there is no source mentioned.

Thanks guys.....
I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. The wall sconces are very well made and have brass or copper edging at the end of the cones.
Finding the designer will be difficult but there is bound to be a picture in a 1950's magazine somewhere. It would be great to see a pic of the wall sconces you mentioned John, they sound similar to these lamps.
The lamps are most likely Australian but the Mategot influence is unmistakable. Anyone think they know the designer?
Thanks for your time.
Cheers,
Tick.

Thanks John
I checked out the advert but I haven't seen any 1950's Australian lamps quite like these. The cone is more like a metal mesh than a perforated steel sheet. They are very well made and it looks like the base plates are brass that has been painted black. I'm no expert on lighting but the construction of these wall sconces appears to be a bit better than most mass produced lamps manufactured in Australia.
Thanks all for your comments and taking the time to look. It's back to the
design reference books and mid century magazines.
Kind regards,
Tick.

New Photos
On closer inspection of the lamps it turns out that someone had painted the base plates. I removed the paint and to my surprise the base plates are solid brass.
I have uploaded some new images which may help to identify these lamps.
They are very much in the style of Mategot but I have no idea who designed or made these lamps.
Any help with an iD is much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
Cheers,
Tick.

Strangest thing ever just happened
Please read it's about your lamps.
My all time favorite movie is Memento by Christopher Nolan, so I am watching snippets of video on youtube and I find your lamps in a clip. I realize this does not help you solve your problem butI had to post.
So weird, check it out.

Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to look and post the movie link. The lamp in Memento is similar in shape but the materials appear to be quite different. The lamps I bought are made of perforated metal and brass and are quite big at 40cm tall.
The more I think about it, the more I think these lamps might be 1950's French and designed by someone like Jacques Biny, Matheiu Mategot, Pierre Guariche, etc. The quality of the construction and materials suggests that these lamps are a bit better than the average mass produced lamp.
Thanks to all those in the DA Community that have taken the time to look and research.
cheers,
Tick.

Can you pls help id these lamps?
After scouring the Internet and reference books I am yet to find a maker for these wall lamps. They are very much in the French style (Mategot) and feature brass components and perforated metal. They are massive at 40 cm tall, and may have been originally used in a commercial building.
I dont know about others, but I really like to know the history of the objects i find. Any help is much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Tick.

.
When I saw these I thought British, possibly Falk Stadelmann? Being in Oz and having bayonet fit holders would add up to being British. Is there any branding on the bulb holders?

Thanks Paulanna
I just had a look and there are no company names on the parts. The light bulb fittings are bakelite and the base plate and collar are solid brass.
I have never seen any lights like these made by Australian companies, so I think you are right about them probably being made in Britain.
Thank you so much for your help.
Cheers,
Tick 🙂

Mystery solved.
My partner solved the mystery. The lamps were manufactured by Newton and Gray Pty Ltd in Australia. The company produced lighting for commercial buildings and a picture of the light fittings can be seen in a February 1959 issue of Architecture and Arts magazine (p.47).
