Agreed Woodywood
and I don't even think it is all to do with short legs, my old creaky bones make reaching down to the laces from a dining chair a pain. Benches are much easier to put shoes on from, although I wouldn't imagine that Riki wants her front entryway cluttered with shoes, that's usually saved for a mudroom, or entry from a garage, at least at our house, although in Japan. . .
So Riki, with all of these great suggestions have you narrowed it down?

If the chair's in close proximity to a door,
then a chair with more height would better balance that vertical element.

Still absorbing
I'm just enjoying the eye candy! Seriously, I've been surfing some of the names of designers that you have mentioned here that are new to me and that is leading to other links and other links, well, you know how it goes. WHC, you knew I would like that orange chair, didn't you? (Go, Tigers). Gustaf, who designed the tall rosewood one in your first picture?

why not
Keep it simple, either a Charlotte Perriand stool or an eames ottoman.
There both functional and great for sitting and tying shoe laces and will give a subtle hint of what's to come in the rest of the house.
Time to call it a day!

Riki, the tall rosewood chair is the "Oxford" by Arne Jacobsen.

An Eames time/life stool...
An Eames time/life stool could be nice in an entryway. Perhaps Its a bit pedestrian to make the statement you are looking for, but they are extremely elegant in their simplicity

Not a chair
I've got an Arne Wahl Iversen planter there now. My furniture hunting has come to a complete standstill because we're moving to Lausanne and we've put the house on the market. I'm so bummed because I didn't even get to finish furnishing half of that great house.
However, I can look forward to furnishing whatever house or apartment we find in Switzerland. Imagine, a whole new continent for me to plunder and pillage for hidden MCM treasures. Lauritz.com, watch out!

That's my other
house. The 1855 Greek Revival is the one with the wine room that I posted pix of on the 10-year reunion thread. The 1957 contemporary house was posted in the ads section for sale but I think that's gone now with the advent of the "radar", right?
When I am up there again next week, I'll snap a photo.
