It might
lack irony, but it could still be good design: cheap, durable, comfortable and (even) good looking. But it's perhaps true that, the more "outrageous" a design concept is, the higher the initial market niche it must occupy to be taken seriously.
I have never forgotten a cartoon strip from the 'fifties Sunday (color) comics section, in which a fashion designer debuts a new "gutter glam" line: clothes made to appear ragged and torn. This was years before pop and punk were conceived. Irony was alive and well, though, apparently. . .
