I recently acquired a Papa Bear chair which appears to be a fake, but it also appears to have considerable age. The teak pads on the arms are only about 3/4inches thick and the fabric runs tightly along the teak pads instead of dipping down in a traditional V in the front of the teak pad. Other wise, all of the dimensions of the chair are right and it does appear to have good age.

Is anyone aware of older fakes?

I'll try to add pictures tomorrow.

Thank you for your help,
Mike

I don't have
a visual reference -- but it is possible that the chair is a Papa Bear that was incorrectly reupholstered at one point ?

Check under the chair
Are there any markings like the AP Stolen stamp, Danish Control badge or a number stamped in ink? I have a papa bear chair with a very faint AP stolen mark, a Danish Control Badge and the number 23 stamped on it. I was told that some of these chairs were sold without the AP Stolen stamp and just had the Danish Control and a number stamped on the frame.

I haven't found any manufacturers marks yet
The chair was poorly reupholstered and most of the frame is covered with material. I suppose that it make sense to pull some of the material off in the hope of finding a mark. If the chair is right, it will need to be reupholstered anyway.
I was more curious about the teak pads on the chair arms and was wondering if anyone knew of a version released with the thin floating pads that I described. All of the examples that I ever saw had much more substantial wood thickness.
Thanks for your reply,
Mike

It looks like
It looks like the wood is 'submerged' (for lack of a better word) under the fabric. Which, as SDR suggested, might be the work of a less-skilled upholsterer who didnt know how to handle the original V'd armests shown.

I'd want to
see a good side view of the green chair before commenting further on whether it is "real" or not. The wood in the arms appears to be of a different shape than that on a Papa Bear.

maybe a "svend skipper"
I don´t want to question everyones knowledge here,
But for me the chair does not have to be a Papa Bear mandatory.
I´ve seen many chairs like this from Sweden, which are called "svend skipper"
Just type "svend skipper into the google picture search and you will see.
A sideview would be very helpful as well as the measures.
But Wegner or not these chairs are very comfortable and enrich every home....
cheers from Berlin
