In these times of financial meltdown, what are your opinions on outsourcing in the architecture/interior design industry, regarding things like 3D visualization, technical drawing etc?

I'm currently based in Bulgaria, where overheads are a fraction of those in the west, and am considering promoting our design studio to western architecture and design companies in this way.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated...

Outsourcing provides us access to overseas talent. The model building & renderings overseas are cost efficient & high quality. These types of outsourced work are not efficient in-house. These are mostly marketing & presentation renderings. But we closely monitor & control these outsourced work w/ the same level as design studies. Drawings integral to important commissions are not outsourced. Especially with construction drawings where coordination is of paramount importance, there are no cost savings.
We are relying less & less on outsourced work. BIM allows us access to an information database created locally & in-house. In addition, outsourcing is counterproductive to nurturing & facilitating career development in the office.
