It's just as difficult as to make a serious weather forecast for the next summer.
Actually we are still since more than 25 years in the postmodern era, and this era is dominated by a random eclecticism, which didn't yet generate a new "proper style".
Well, you might say that every style in the past has been developed from older styles, so every proper style is in fact the result of an "applied eclecticism".
There is always a certain point of design evolution which allows to say: okay, this seems to be a new proper style, because existing style elements have been composed in such an inventive manner, that we can regard it as "proper style".
But only the future can judge it.
Chair_ONE, maybe.
But if you're only talking about lounge chairs... No.
The 670 has been in continuous production at Herman Miller for over 55 years; the Womb's been in production at Knoll for 65 years! I can't think of any lounge chairs introduced in the last 5 years (or 10, or 30) that are likely to have that sort of longevity.
But I also don't pay really close attention to new designs. Tknx, do you think there's anything as good as those chairs being designed now?
It's difficult to see further than one's own time.
Man has always a feeling of being at an end.
And what now?
I believe the work of Maarten Van Severen will become even more iconic and keep it's value as 'vintage' pieces.
His quality speaks through his designs, not so much out of his personality or image (like a Rachid or Starck).
RE: Morrisons Air Chair
It's funny how my parents dislike my Eames shell chairs and LCWs because they remind them of college in the late 1960s and early 70s - meanwhile Morrison's Air Chair brings me nightmares of early Monday morning 2D design class during college in the mid-2000s.
As for current designs, I can see a lot of Konstantin Grcic standing the test of time. It will be interesting to see how the Medici fares. It reminds me of a modern interpretation of the adirondack chair.
I'll probably take a lot of flack for this, but I can see IKEA's POÄNG chair becoming a design classic (if it hasn't already) because of it's modern, yet accessible design.
