Take a look at the first picture below. It is from an auction currently on Ebay. The second pic is the same sculpture in stone from the Noguchi museum. Wondering what the story is here. Copy? Authorized Reproduction? Original? Never seen a copy of a Noguchi sculpture like it before...but can't imagine its an original either. Thoughts?

Hmm.
There's certainly a remarkable resemblance.
The seller's no rube, judging by some of their past sales-- it'd be surprising if they hadn't the good sense to have it appraised, seeing as it's purported to have come from the CBS building.

If the wider one
is an attempted reproduction of the original, it has two different kinds of "errors" : The entire main element is stretched wider, while remaining at the same height -- as if it was digitally and one value was increased. On the other hand, the small top-most element is simply enlarged, in correct proportion.
I saw works from this period when they were new -- at the Stable Gallery in Manhattan, if I'm not mistaken. . .
My first impression remains that both could be legitimate works of the artist -- and/or his assistant, if any ? Why can't they both be genuine ? Signature ?

The wood version is clearly wider
and the proportions of other elements a bit different.
Would a sculpture like this need to be wider in one material vs another(?)-- stable with a smaller "foot" in a heavy material like stone, but needing a broader "foot" in a lighter material like wood?
The obvious differences in proportion make it all the more plausible (to me, at least), not less.

That's a
plausible and interesting idea, WHC. I think it's not unusual for an artist to explore an idea and produce variations on a theme. . .
Noguchi produced far more "pure art" than furniture -- though his lighting pieces, and his coffee table, will always warm the hearts of furniture modernists.

This lovely Noguchi "Mist" sculpture is a couple of block away from home, but no longer "mists". The water was shut off years ago...I'm really not sure why. I hope that the link works.

Ended early. It was bid up to ~$1500. May be relisted in the future.

What the?
Do you suppose they accepted a BUY-IT-NOW offer?
Boo. I want details.
What makes you think there's any possibility that it may be relisted, Woodywood?

Stated reason:
"As-Estate-Sales decided to cancel the auction so we can gather more information."
Not sure if it's true. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask them.

I find it hard to believe they didn't "gather information" before putting it on Ebay.
