I'm trying to buy a Nelson Sunburst Clock. Apparently a company named Vitra has been authorized to reproduce these. I also see some clocks that say "Eames" that use the exact same photo in their web ads, yet these seem to be a little less expensive. Can someone please give me the scoop?
Thank you!
Some info
George Nelson designed clocks were originally manufactured by the Howard Miller Clock company. So these are the clocks make circa mid-cent. If you wanted to buy one of these clocks, they usually fetch a pretty penny. With the blessing of Jacqueline Nelson (George Nelson's lucky descendant), the company Vitra has been authorised to remake some of his clocks. These are pretty much identical to the original Howard Miller clocks but there are some slight differences. The main difference is that the new Vitra clocks are battery operated, whereas the old clocks are powered by wiring. So to answer your question, buying a Vitra clock (re-edition) will be as close to the "original" as you can get. Vitra as a whole, do make high quality items. Any other modern remake is an unauthorised copy.
