I was walking past a building near my house which has been there for a hundred or so years and noticed a modern extension had been added, or looked as if it had been thrown on!

Anyone else experienced inappropriate additions to older buildings?

The second image definitely looks like a Photoshop job.
It looks like a postmodernist shocker is inches away from swallowing a genteel Georgian town house.
This is what Prince Charles's nightmares look like.
If this is real, where is it?

I am going to
have to respectfully disagree here on one issue. IF IT IS DONE RIGHT, melding contemporary architecture into/onto an historic building can be breathtaking.
The two examples above are hideous. I will post a picture from Bilbao, Spain where the architect(s?) did a great job.
In the museum pictured above, the original building is off-putting, in my opinion. It looks like a 1960's mock-up of faux colonial.
Off to search my pix.

Wow...that certainly...
Wow...that certainly commands attention.
Reminds me of the Christian Cathedral built upon a Muslim Mosque during the age of Crusades (see link bleow) In both of these cases, the assertion is fascinating.

Yes
I have seen it done well as well... Often shown in magazines, etc.
These two examples, however, not so much.

Disagree with who Riki? the thread is about modern extensions on old buildings done badly. I hae lots of books with amazing architecture but I see so much walking around that just should not have been allowed.

I agree Riki, I'm a modernist and not against the mixing of styles.
When an architect gets it right a blending of contemporary and historic styles within close proximity can create an interesting and complimentary mix.
A walk around the streets of London will provide plenty of examples of this.
Buildings in london both historic and modern are rubbing shoulders with each other due to the hasty rebuilding after the war, most of the time it works beautifully and produces a very interesting built environment.

Sorry,
Arthur, I didn't realize that you only wanted to talk about ill-fitted marriages on your thread.

Or maybe its because the two I have shown are so extreme everyone wants something beautiful to look at?
How about this as an example of my original point.
