I am going to
have to respectfully disagree here on one issue. IF IT IS DONE RIGHT, melding contemporary architecture into/onto an historic building can be breathtaking.
The two examples above are hideous. I will post a picture from Bilbao, Spain where the architect(s?) did a great job.
In the museum pictured above, the original building is off-putting, in my opinion. It looks like a 1960's mock-up of faux colonial.
Off to search my pix.
Wow...that certainly...
Wow...that certainly commands attention.
Reminds me of the Christian Cathedral built upon a Muslim Mosque during the age of Crusades (see link bleow) In both of these cases, the assertion is fascinating.

I agree Riki, I'm a modernist and not against the mixing of styles.
When an architect gets it right a blending of contemporary and historic styles within close proximity can create an interesting and complimentary mix.
A walk around the streets of London will provide plenty of examples of this.
Buildings in london both historic and modern are rubbing shoulders with each other due to the hasty rebuilding after the war, most of the time it works beautifully and produces a very interesting built environment.
