I'm sure this has been covered 100 times, but I am collecting a set of 4 Eames fiberglass side shells in different colors to go around a certain table that I have and they are all attached to their original H-bases.
There seems to be a "movement" toward taking off those old H or X bases and replacing with new eiffel or dowel bases.
Am I the only one who thinks the old original H-bases look more honest/more clean than the fancy bases. I scrutinized some new Vitra bases today and they just look too new. Any opinions?
original
that 'movement' has been going on for years now, and it seems to me, most people (who are design focused) are reverting back to keeping the original. I know I am. I threw out my old modernica eiffel bases in favor of the old ones I took off.
And to that point, I have two wall saver bases if anyone needs em.'
nice to see
that there's such consensus on this here. I bought both repro eiffel and dowel bases to see what it's like in my own home but they're all gone. Thank god the best way to make some money off those surplus shells is putting a dowel base under them and put them on ebay 🙂
I really like white h-bases now, they are a change and look great with colored shells.
social context
I think that a major reason people change their chair bases is that the H-bases are so tied to institutional use. If you grew up seeing this chair in every government building, cafeteria, barber shop, laundromat, etc., it imparts a contextual "meaning" on the chair that is decidedly cold and impersonal. The less common bases don't have the same baggage. Their more delicate structures are decidedly non-institutional.
