Well, SDR...
I can't hire him. I won't marry him. And I'm opposed to killing, so that only leaves abuse. But, I'm with you. He's good. I'm not sure that I would ever find the right house for bugmorph furniture, but this guy does have bugmorph nailed better than anyone else I've seen. The next movie director that wants to film Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" absolutely has to hire this guy as his set designer. Hey, maybe we should all write to Raid or Decon or Orkin or some other pest control company and they could hire him to do the interior for their headquarters. I'm actually serious here. Visually, this is as good as weird gets. I wonder if any of it functions well?
I have only one serious criticism. In his promotion he mentions his firm uses computerized design. I really wish he and all the other designers would quit talking about using computers. First, my 7 year old uses a computer. There is nothing impressive about using computers. What would be impressive is if he didn't use computers. Second, can you imagine Charles and Rae Eames saying we designed this bent wood furniture with pencils and paper and carpenter's squares? Or Herman Miller or Vitra saying back in the 50s: All our furniture is designed on a drafting table. I mean the tools you used just don't matter. If you're a really good designer, even the materials shouldn't be advertised. To steal from James Carville, its the design, stupid.
Otherwise, this is the first work in awhile that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I'm not sure that's good or bad, but it did.
Please, someone hire this guy to do a bug spray can. In a truly perfect world, his name would be Gregor Samsa, or at least Franz Kafka.

Well, yes
--and I was referring to his other skills and characteristics (upholstery and fabric work among them -- gourmet chef, too ?) that make him sound almost super-human. I note that he is a self-described nit-picker and universal critic -- so he might be a "little much," in person. But I just love the aesthetic of that "tree-branch"-decorated case piece, and the biomorphic (did you say bug-morphic ?) tri-table at the top (can't figure out what the central "drape" is for, though. . .). Shades of Prouve'-Chareau, here and there.
I agree with your comments about touting "computer-drawn" as a distinguishment (the scourge of our fellow "DesignCommunity" .com is a fellow whose only claim to fame -- despite his protestations to the contrary -- may be his prodigious CAD rendering skill) -- though in the interest of full disclosure I must confess to being a die-hard pencil drafter, and draughtsman (?). On the other hand, I believe material specification is crucial -- part and parcel of the meaning of the design ? I agree with the sentiment, in the abstract, however; Rudolph Schindler famously said that he didn't care if a building "was made of steel, glass, putty or air" -- space was his concern.
But the method of design, and of recording that design, and of realizing that design, are all of second importance, I agree -- or perhaps of importance only to the designer, the maker, and the historian (if any) ?

Wiping the tears away
I read the crits and I must say they really cracked me up. But a shade on the brutal side I think.

I try to write with a sense of humor, but...
I never mean to hurt. Truly dull or uninteresting stuff I usually ignore--the most potent criticism of all. I actually do like this designer's work. I just don't know whether I could live with it. Of course, I could say the same about certain work of other talented designers. I don't know if bugmorph will ever come into serious vogue, or that I would want it to, but if it does, this outfit will rule.
