We can judge because the one photograph is WRONG! The thin edge pulls were not even in chrome, and IMO they look bad this way. The veneer looks cheap and is used vertically grained rather than horizontally on the fronts... it really doens't even look like a Nelson piece to me. The whole is in the details..
These commercial photos are indeed disappointing
but it is probably/hopefully too early to draw any conclusions on the finish until we see other pics.
I found one on the Herman Miller blog, taken at the ICFF, see the first image below. It's a bad shot, but at least I think they look less artifical there.
As for the pulls, the second image is from an old Treadway auction. I don't know if the pulls are original, but at least it seems as if there were other options than the top mounted pulls in Lunchbox's picture, or there would have been marks from them? I think I've seen them with wooden pulls also. Anyone have more info on this?
Yes
There were pull options that you could select for either Basic Cabinets or the Thin Edge group. There are those that most commonly appear on the two different designs, and for a reason. They work best or look best on the respective designs.
Could you order your Basic Cabinet with pulls designed to go with the Thin Edge group? Sure. Should you? Well.....
I guess the issue
is whether or not you want a company like Herman Miller to reintroduce anything or not.
The vintage pieces have a patina that's not going to reproduced these days, and is you look through Dwell or other similar magazines, people today are promoting either a light birch finish or a dark wood. Primavera is not what's happening these days.
I'm still looking forward to seeing these new pieces.
Well they SCREAM...
"reunion tour" in a voice that is too hoarse to hit the high notes.
Do we want them to reissue? Unfortunately this phenomenon is being replayed over and over these days in a multiple arenas. Reunion tours, PT Cruisers/Chevy HHRs, reissues of "old" furniture. Sadly, Herman Miller seems to be resting on their laurels here. I may be in the minority, but I LOVE the Aria Desk and would love to see Herman Miller do more of THAT, than reissuing bad renditions of their Golden Oldies no matter how much I like those old tunes.

I agree on the aesthetics. I much prefer the original pulls. The hour glass pulls, if used, should at the very least be matte.
My interest was in whether or not the reissue was historically accurate in this respect, and it seems it is.
I am all for accurate and well made reissues. Good design should not be limited to the lucky few who are able to hunt down vintage pieces. Sadly, few reissues are accurate and well made.

I agree the benches are great. I had one. I just didn't think the Nelson bench was very useful. It hurt my ass to sit on, and things were too wobbly or fell through used as a table. I would have kept it if I had enough room for useless objects, but at 1240 sq ft I do not. I didn't sell bc of the quality. It was top notch.
Anyone see this
ended ebay auction for the first re-issue?
As far as the bench goes I have a couple in the house and really like them for placement at the foot of a bed.

Dear hermanmillerhome1,
Why does the new "BCS" line have Thin Edge pulls? And why
aluminum Thin Edge pulls? Were those ever actually used in
production? And why does the veneer look so terrible? Honestly,
why can't you just produce reissues the way the originals were
produced? I'm not sure I can distinguish this cabinet from an
Ikea production. Thanks. Joshua

Dear Lunchbox,
Dear Joshua
Thank you for you for your interest in our products. We, Herman
Miller, as the original manufacturer have George Nelson's
original drawings and specs for the product. While I'm sure you
are also very knowledgeable about Nelson's designs. Nelson
actually had several pulls (9) that were interchangeable (could be
ordered with any of them) between his collections.
While your monitor may not be reproducing the image as well as
it looks in person - I can assure you that the veneer is
outstanding in person!
Thanks again for your interest - this will make great investment
for a serious collector.

Thanks Lunch for posting that
People who collect the vintage originals will probably find fault with any of these reintroductions. I'm glad that Herman Miller is beinging back forms that will appeal to young modern buyers. I may even buy one myself.
As for those benches, I have seen plenty of vintage originals and the only difference between the old ones and the new ones are clear lacquer on the light birch tone.
I have one that's holding about 25 plastic LP size cubes (made by Ingrid) that houses some of my books. It's a heavy load and the bench is handling that load perfectly. The other one I'm using against a window as a seat.
I hope that the cabinets Herman Miller's reintroducing will be also available without legs and with aglued-on rubber material for stacking on the benches.
I also hope they will use the hairpin legs, as well.
If you look around at Hive Modern, Unica, Highbrow, DWR and other websites, you'll find a few beds and hardly any bedroom chests of drawers. These reintroduced pieces will be a smart choice for a modern bedroom. Also for an office or for the lising room.
I'm not a big fan of the dark wood tone they're apparently using, but I'm sure they will also be in a matching birch-tone that will match the bench.
I think this is a much smarter decision than to reintroduce Nelson Swagged Leg group, which didn't sell particularly well.
