My original inquiry
to Herman Miller was because in the otherall sceme of things, the two types of furniture not being produced much these days are bookshelves and chests of drawers....at least for those who want quality mid-century modern design.
Since both of the bookshelves and chests of drawers use the same basic structure, I suggested to them that they might be able to reissue 4 or 6 sizes and make them available either in a chest or bookshelf format.
I sure do like my two vintage chests of drawers, but I don't much care for the 'vintage' condition of them!
There's a number of people producing high quality modern beds...it would be nice to see chests and bookshelves also being made available.
By the way, what is wrong with the swag leg reissues?
Two points
Those vintage pieces with the Primavera finish are probably darker than they were in 1947-1952.
Second, the lighter birch-y finishes (like the Nelson bench) are much more popular to those buying something than vintage, so I perfectly understand their color-tone decision.
Getting back to the "new"
storage bookshelves and chests of drawers, I called HM for the home and although they could not officially confirm anything, something very close to what we thought will be premiered at the NY furniture show in late May.
So, it looks like it's gonna be a reality!
In this case, since I'm moving into a 4 bedroom house, I will be buying one or two of them depending on their price.
here they are...just...
here they are...just announced on FB today. Looks like they have the metal base Nelson bench with metal legs again too.
