Hey HM afficionados, I think I've found a rough but still cool 3-seater Sling Sofa, I might be able to convince the owners to sell it to me. Does anyone know if these have a Herman Miller mark anywhere? I looked underneath and it had 3 rubbery panels under the seats, on the bottom it was stamped by some manufacturer in Massachusets. I thought maybe they sourced this part, much like Fagus straps? I couldn't find any other marks but the look and construction were the same. Do you think knockoffs were made in the same time period? It looks at least 20-30 years old. I figured for a couple hundred bucks it would be a nice piece. Thanks 🙂

Herman Miller
If you found a Nelson sling sofa, it's Herman Miller. There have never been any knock-offs of that design. The construction is actually quite complex. The rubber sling is correct and should be in good condition if you want to buy it. I think it's called "elasta-seat" and if it's torn or damaged, I don't know how you'd repair it. To my knowledge, there are no replacements available.
Also inspect the molded leather on the ends. If that is torn, it's difficult to replace.
What color is it?

Thanks. It's black, one of...
Thanks. It's black, one of the cushions is torn and the end leather sections I think are intact, but not sure. That could be reupholstered for sure. I figured it wasn't a knockoff, but you never know for sure w/out the label. I think for maybe $200 it would be worth it? I have alot of projects but this one needs saving 🙂

If the rubber's still OK
then I'd jump on it! Getting new leather for the cushions might be pricey, but easy to get done.
Lucky you!
By the way, ever seen the 2-seater? Ever seen the rare matching coffee table?

Dang
Went and looked and apparently I wasn't the first to show interested, so they looked it up and are now taking offers! Not that I'm suprised, it's in the middle of Chicago so there are plenty of mcm nuts around. The best offer so far was $850, so I didn't even offer anything. The rubber seats are in great shape, but the leather back strips are ripped thru. One end leather section is in great shape, but the other has torn from the tubing in a 6inch section, so that would be tricky to re-do. It's actually at a firehouse sitting in the garage believe it or not! They get stuff donated all the time to sit on and just happened to get this by chance. Looks like they will get a bigger donation than they thought! Man it sure is nice though, the metal frame is in great shape. If anyone is interested in the CHI area its the fire house on Damen just south of Irving Park, stop by and put in your bid!

That's a damn shame
they think they've got a $15,000 sofa or something.
Assuming that all of the rubber is intact, having all of the leather completely replaced would certainly cost probably $1,000.00....so perhaps it's not worth the risk.
Imagine finding a Sling Sofa in good, usable condition, but with those rubber supports torn. In a way, it sounds like something that I might feel comfortable having unless it was in excellent condition!

Ha
Yeah they sure do, I would be annoyed but I am actually oddly happy for them as most firehouses are underfunded and do fundraisers anyway. I might still drop off my card and offer something so if the others don't come through I might end up with it. Seems like alot of work ($$) to re-do, but it wouldn't have to be immediately. We just had a Pearsall sofa recovered last year so it would have to wait. It sure is beautiful though, even in it's presently disheveled state!
