Ive done a search here for information on my nelson bench, but I am coming up with more questions than answers. Is there a single thread detaling what to look for with these pieces?
here's my story:
10 years ago I graduated from college and moved back home with my parents. They were in the process of buying a home up the block from the one we were in prior to it and everything in it going into an estate aucton. While touring the home, I noticed among the piles of stuff in the garage for the sale an ebonized Nelson bench. its approximately 70" long. I asked the daughters of the original owners if they would sell it ahead of the auction as well. They took $200 for it. The daughters said it was in their basement for their entire lives and thought it was one of the original pieces of furniture their partents bought just after getting married(around 1948)for thier first home.
I bought it and put it back in the house that my parents eventually bought. When I moved out I left it in the bedroom there because it was too big for the condos I was living in. I am now in a house and the bench is back waiting for a family room remodel holding a 58" tv. Im not sure what I should do with it. Th ebony is cracked where the slats terminate and there was a small stain where the daughters told me a patent leather purse sat on it for years.. I would like to clean it up or at least make it presentable in the room when its finished. The bench has a HM tag underneath. Unfourtunately, the glides which were like large tacks were discoloring he hardwood floor at my parents house and were replaced. Were those original? how do I find some more?
Let me know what you think. I can post pictures and better measurements later if i would help... I stumbled across this site at work and it seems like a place for answers.
thanks!
?What should I be looking at...
?What should I be looking at with his piece for authenticity? contruction methods/details?
?If it is real, where can I get glides? were the tack style ones original?
?Does all the info I gave sound accurate for 1948?
?if real, what is this table worth? there seem to be so many fakes and finding something comprable without know ing the above is a challenge.
