I started to pick up some nice pieces of furniture, including two nice nelson benches. One thing that drives me mad is that all of my crappy furniture up until now is darker. I would like to keep everything one tone... now I am thinking light because of the lighter color of the nelson bench (and I got some black wishbone chairs with light bases). I do have a black noguchi modernica table which goes well with the nelson benches too. Do you have any tips for matching wood colors, and how to make the nelson bench look good?
Matching is pointless....
Matching is pointless. Stark. Stale. You want to mix up your finishes and tones as much as possible in the scheme of decorating. And the Nelson bench isn't half as sexy without the blonde slats. Keep it simple. Buy stuff you like. Make sure they aren't going to fight with one another. Beyond that, don't overthink details such as matching wood finishes. After all, walnut from one dealer isn't the same shade as the next. Mix it up.
It's hard to believe, but I agree with Lunchbox;
most good wood goes together beautifully and most of us have no issue with mixing wood tones.
In my liviung room, I have birch, walnut, and mahogony. I'm not a fan of oak (too much of it 'round these parts) and it's a bit too yellow for me. In other words, oak is absolutely hideous (no, I don't mean that!)
I like the mixing of woods and fabrics in a room that's 'collected' rather than a room that looks like you paid a decorator to create a total homogenized environment.
