I've been trying to do some research on these chairs I just purchased and have found the interwebs to be lacking in info on this particular design. Neither retain their labels but are both stamped "4663" on the inside of the front seat rails. Both retain what I believe to be the original finish and upholstery. I know it is an early Nelson design (1947 according to Wright). Does anyone know how long this design was produced? I'm trying to narrow down when these possibly could have been made. Thanks!
This beautiful chair
was part of the debut Herman Miller George Nelson collection in 1947, and it was still in the 1955-56 catalog - when many of the 1947 pieces had already been discontinued. (Ever see the matching settee? It only lasted a year!)
The chair was apparently quite a success; it was shown in photos promoting the 1955-56 Executive Office Group, so you can assume that the chair was being sold in office installations, as well. (I'm pretty sure I have seen the chair in front of a Comphrehensive Storage System photo, too.)
I'm not totally sure, but I would guess you could still order the chair into the 1960's.
The rare settee
is on page 46 of the original 1947 catalog, and page 165 of the Schiffer book "Herman Miller Interior Views", which contains the '1950' (but really contains alot of the 1947 initial collection) catalog, as well as the 1952 catalog.
It's still available and really worth buying.
