I recently purchased a pair of vintage Platner wire lounge chairs which are just the wire frame...no fiberglass shell, no foam cushion, no upholstery, etc. I've tried searching for replacement shells but have come up with nothing. Does anyone know where I could buy a pair of the shells (and possibly even the cushions and cover)? Perhaps a boat builder could make the fiberglass shells but he would most likely need an original to copy, Grrr... Thank you
I've never seen a shell for sale without the frame.
But yes, you could buy a beat-up old rusty-but-complete chair, strip off the foam and upholstery, pay someone to splash a mold off the shell and make two replica shells, then send them out to be upholstered. Once they're installed in your frames, you'll have two more-or-less genuine, newly upholstered used Platner lounges.
Unfortunately, I'd expect that process to take at least a few months, and I'd be very surprised if you were able to do it for less than the cost of just buying two newly upholstered used Platner lounges on Ebay.
I could be wrong, of course. If you manage to do the chairs at low cost, this 2003 Corvette could be your next project...
