Hi, have a Nelson type bench, not sure its origins, no provenance.....has some age to it, and colour, appears to have had a label or medallion on it at some stage, but the finish doesn't seem great, are the spaces inbetween the slats finished or dull/flat, the black legs don't look very old and appear to have been sprayed, can't see again grain etc. I've never seen a real one before, so assume its a copy, joinery seems ok, but has nails in it, do vitra or late production miller ones look like this, thanks for any help.

Hi again, thanks for your input guys, but really I was looking for something more academic...ie whether it could be by HM or vitra. I can't find many images showing what a real one looks like underneath etc....its certainly not my intention to gloat, on the contrary Id like to learn as much information as possible, any positive information will be greatly appreciated,

For starters - the bench looks right. Aside from that the biggest question is where do you live?
If you live in Europe, the UK, or Asia the odds are likely the bench is Vitra.
If you live in North America the odds are the bench is Herman Miller.
Both companies have contracts that forbid them from selling on the others' turf. However, without labeling or a clear provenance from one manufacturer or the other, you may just need to be satisfied with the knowledge that it is a genuine bench.
