I just read a story in a recent Consumer Reports about nanotech, products from it, and potential health risks. I don't want to focus on the health risks right now beyond saying the article does a good job of explaining that the evidence is not yet in, but that smallness, in and of itself, may one day become a toxic issue. Nevertheless...

There are some mind boggling products that are being enabled by the technology of nano engineered fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, etc. Among the most interesting for the design of space is radiant surfacing materials. Walls (or anything else I suppose) can be covered with these new nano particle based materials that can radiate light when plugged into electrical sources. The capability of making walls and ceilings light sources rather than lights seems quite remarkable in its implications. Likewise, it appears designers are soon going to be able to have as part of their palatte the option of making most any object they design radiant.

I'm wondering if any designers have made any aesthetic headway already working with this new capability? Is anyone excited by the prospect? Or is this just another technology that will have some sizzle value, but little real organic impact on the way interiors and for that matter exteriors are designed?
