NY artist gallery suggestions  

In Old Town, Alexandria (VA), there is a place called the Torpedo Factory. It's a warehouse-like building where many local artists (painters, sculptors, jewelry designers, photographers, etc.) have their studios and also sell their wares at prices ranging from very reasonable to very high.

Will be in NY this weekend. Are there any art galleries/studios in Manhattan worth checking out where one can purchase unique art by local artists (at various price points)? I would especially be interested in going to a place that featured the works of many different artists.
