I just acquired this chair and wanted to know if anyone had any information on the base. It was so cheap I bought it just for the base because I had never seen it and now am wondering if it will turn in to a garage work bench chair or if I might want to send it off to be powder coated or possibly some other option. It swivels 90 degrees in either direction and then springs back to the front. Is it just some frankenstein base or has anyone ever seen this?

I know..
I know, I am hoping EamesHead or Woodywood can help me out!
Here is one more pic after a quick disassembly and light cleaning. The top of the base has 846 and 2... Don't know if it helps but I figured every little bit does.

Looks to me like someone...
Looks to me like someone took the mounting bracket and portion of a contract base and attached it to that pedestal

I have a box
Full of those bases in black. I've even listed them on etsy and eBay to sell them off.
It's a bar swivel base for the Eames shells. Imagine an ice cream parlor or a diner counter.

well thank god...
.. that Retro Hunter had the answer, because I sure as heck didn't.
Those top bracket parts that attach to the mounts do look a little thick. Is there a chance that they might have been made by a third party? Like once the side shells became ubiquitous someone did a batch of bases to sell to ice cream parlors?
The overall look seems a little bit "stodgy" somehow... but not THAT stodgy. (I just mean a bit less lightweight and graceful looking than the typical Eames base.)
Like I said, I have nothing. Just a little bit of "WTF".
I love a good mystery.

Cool
I haven't seen this particular base before, but I have seen other versions which bolt to the floor.

Awesome chair
That thing is rugged and badass. #cowboyeames
What did you spend on it? I just acquired my first few Naugahyde shells (I think some are interesting and others garish) and find them to be pretty comfortable. I love good beat up versions of objects I own/cherish.
