Wow what a great story.
Robert thanks for taking the time to write and post the Gomme company history. I truly enjoyed it.
I have been reading this board for years and these little spats are not infrequent.
We utilize the written word which lacks the quality of voice, tone, or facial signals normally relied upon in informal conversation among agreeable acquaintances.
I have rarely read an intentionally vitriolic posting on this forum; and as such, I attempt to temper any ill feelings I perceive as simply misunderstanding and the consequence of this medium.
I expect we all strive to be courteous and considerate towards the feelings of others as well as appreciative for the selfless sharing of their time and knowledge
I'm going
to go out on a limb and suggest that Robert's "instant essay" was borrowed -- and to ask where it originally appeared. If I am right, may I suggest also that such texts be credited ? If I am wrong, then "good work Robert" is my only fallback !
As to the idea that posters be identified by continent (at least) -- well, why not ? It would certainly help *me* ! As to knowing who the regulars are, I think it would be good to assume that any reader might be a novice here.
I confess that, after fifty years of modern "studies," as an American I was ignorant of G Plan. . .
Having 'heard of G Plan' or n...
Having 'heard of G Plan' or not is neither here nor there and rather misses the point. I wonder what reaction I or Robert or any other non US forum user would get if we contributed to a thread on ,say, Widdicomb or Directional with a comment like Barry's?
I'd say
I would say gear things towards the initial poster. In this case the original post was a chair ID that was answered rather quickly and accurately. Subsequent discussions can be opened up from the initial post - but that isn't always the purpose of a posting. But, since this is a public forum, anyone has the ability to expand the discussion - usually by asking a polite question, such as "I've not heard of this designer/firm/object - can you tell me more?"
As a side note - not all Americans are dumb.
I can only speak for myself
but I never assume anyone on this forum is American. In fact, just the opposite, I tend to pose my questions and comments in such a way that assume the majority of readers will be from abroad. Isn't that what makes this such a great discussion board in the first place?
Now Barry, just admit that you could have answered your own question with a "wee Google" as MarkTulip says and Paulanna, try to play nice.
Let's change the subject. What's Gianni S. D. Frutta been up to lately? Did he ever design anything for G Plan? I would think that G Spot would have been more in his design genre!
All well and good.
Thanks for restoring good humor to the discussion. I might have been "part of the solution instead of the problem," of course. (For extra points, which 60's radical uttered those words ?)
Guess I can't see the point of assuming anything about the nationality of a poster (all of us here post in English, so that's no help !); yet I hope we can agree that to know whereof one or another of us speaks, based on the simple fact of his or her place of residence, would quickly and easily make any assumptions we might wish to make, possible.
So, although we know that it costs our hosts something to make any change in the board's format or function, perhaps we can wait patiently for the next "scheduled maintenance," and, if we agree on the importance of it, we could add two or three capital letters to our signature, either with each post or by altering the signature we are registered with.
Now, is THAT possible. . .?
As we have already explained...
As we have already explained on several occasions, we cannot add an information that we didn't collect when you registered on the forum. However, we started to add a mention of the country in 2 letters next to the names of the participants when we know their nationality and we will try progressively to complete this process day after day.
For a more advanced solution, it will be necessary to wait still a little bit.
