a grand experiment indeed...
So often, nature does a better job than culture. I think this piece will be spectacular as it engages with the forces of nature and its color and texture begin to erode/evolve into who knows what.
The aspect of the unknown is the extra bonus. Sure, we know what rust is going to look like, but I bet that there will be another variable that could not even be imagined beforehand.
Mark, I love the way you take strange delight in bringing together words that have no business being in the same sentence... "teeth and toilet bowls..."
(I know you just wanted to give us a nice "visual" huh....)
Hope you are doing well Mark.
I've said it before, I'll say it again . . .
. . . I do loves me some craigslist.
Stumbled across this guy as I was doing a CL search for Jere pieces for the dining room. Instead, I found one that fits perfectly over the fireplace.
The overall style look very similar to the Marc Creates pieces, but I cannot find an exact design match on either the marccreates.com website or their 1974 catalog. The size of mine is roughly 41x21" and is more rectangular in shape than other ones I've seen. The edges of the brass rectangles are not straight, but more "ravioli" like textured. And finally, the sheets themselves are not welded directly to the masonry nail grid structure, but are connected by 1-2" long thin brass dowels (welded at both ends), so that the sheets float in front of the grid.
I have sent off these photos to Marc Creates for them to confirm if this is one of theirs, and if so what is the name and design date.
Well Mark, it looks like we...
Well Mark, it looks like we are both wrong. Here is the prompt (and succinct) reply to my inquiry from Marc Weinstein's son, Boyd:
"Nice piece, but not ours. Thanks, Boyd"
I was able to find an exact design that was sold on eBay in January from a Dallas seller, so I'm guessing this was not a one-off homemade piece.
Maybe someone will see these posts sometime down the road and will be able to shed some light.

Wall piece already lowered...
Wall piece already lowered ~3" since this photo. It's not perfectly centered vertically on the wall, but we plan on filling in the mantle with some type of pottery/vases/etc, so it should eventually be visually centered.
Never thought of the tripod lamp on the mantle. It's currently next to a sofa and provides a soft warm light for either reading or mood lighting. Might have to try out the suggestion though.
