I saw some Moller chairs once
that were of a very active grain walnut, I think, and had seats woven of flat leather strips about 3/16" wide. I have never seen any since. I am quite sure they were original, too.
There was a conversation on this board not too long ago about seats woven of a flat wool tape that is about 1/4" wide but I can't remember if they were Moller chairs. Seems like they were. It came in a lot of colors and I am pretty sure that someone had a JPG of an original print ad for them, one of every color.
I have just been sent an image of some Model 78's with what looks like very old Rattan seats, I'll see if I can find out if it is original, it certainly looks like it could be.
Spanky, do you know if the flat wool tape often seen on Moller chairs is still available? I would like to re-do a set of 77's which original had the flat tape but it is in bad shape.
I am thinking that working with the tape will be much quicker than paper cord and easier on the fingers.
H. moon, I've just spent
a lot of time looking for that thread where we talked about it here, to no avail. I know the word "tape" was part of the conversation but a keyword search didn't come up with anything.
Anyway, I think that the original tape is no longer made but someobne found a tape that is very similar but not in as many colors, maybe it was me, I can't even remember now.
I know I've seen the photo of the ad, though. I wish it was easier to find stuff in this forum!
flat braid is maybe the correct name?
I mentioned this before. At one time it came in all different kind of colors, kinda cool (red, green, natural...)
My black 75's are done in natural, all factory original but have now all issues concerning tension or are in destress.
I am contemplating doing these in black vinyl (as I have seen originals with this upholstery), to create an all-black result.
But I wonder if it is needed to get rid of the little corners at the front legs: I rather would not!

Leather weave
Spanky, I meant to post a photo a while agog or you of the leather seats but forgot and lost track of the thread - sorry about that.
I bought these upholstered with the intent of weaving them, and found the leather weave underneath when I removed the upholstery. I believe they are original as they retain the label from the store indicating the model number and the material as brown leather.
I tried searching online for other examples but came up with nothing. All I have been able to find is a photo from mobilia magazine noting the leather weave. I apologize for the blurry image, I'll try and find it again and post a clearer pic.
Wow, thanks to both of you!
Yes, braid was what I should have looked for! And that's the ad.
And yes, that would be the woven leather though I think the ones I saw had a lot more variation in color for whatever reasons. Or maybe I'm just remembering the grain of the wood. I didn't get to look at them for very long and it was 8-10 years ago. I will never forget how stunning they were, though, and how they took my breath away.
Thank you all, thats answered a few questions.
My 77's currently have the flat green braid, I would love to re weave them in the Canary Yellow, if anyone has any idea where to find this material please let me know. I'll try contacting Moller, but that can be very hit and miss.
The blurry image I was sent of the 78's which I thought were rattan must be the leather weave as seen in bubs image.
I did end up acquiring the chairs with the woven leather strip seats.
They are very handsome in this upholstery option. I am still not entirely sure if it is real leather or a synthetic.
The strips are produced from a cotton core with the leather material coated on each side, due to the age of the chairs some of the coating has chipped off to reveal the cotton underneath.
It seems that J L Moller didn't use this style of upholstery very often.
Apologise for the crap image.
