I recently purchased some of Modernica's fiberglass Barstool Dowel Swivel Chairs from a Modernica dealer. A lot of the packaging said "Made in China"- the swivels, the wood legs, etc. I was shocked because Modernica's website says "Handcrafted in Los Angeles, USA." I guess they mean "Made by Machines in China, Hand Assembled in Los Angeles, USA."

Anyone else had this experience? I have pictures of the packaging, but I'm not saavy about how to post it here.

Not sure...
I have been to the factory a couple of times in person in downtown L.A. They seem to be cutting pieces etc...I think maybe the metal could be made in China? I'll have to ask then about that one! I always assumed it was all made there-except for maybe the foam pieces for the sofas and things like that. Interesting to hear that about them.

Hate to say it but that...
Hate to say it but that company is going down hill fast
They use to be so nice, I asked for puck for one of their chairs
that someone brought in to recover cause the green fiberglass was so ugly and faded they could not live with, They told me to send the chair back to them and they would put the puck on, cause they did not want to sell any of the pucks.
another fellow who i will not mention his name sells them for 16.00 dollars each. a real rip off. no telling what modernica would try to sell them for.

Who was the dealer? It is...
Who was the dealer? It is possible that this dealer sells the Modernica shells but pads their bottom line by pairing the shells with non-Modernica dowel bases. Why not ask them?

anabelle...
Aren't you in cohorts with Modernica's competition?
That wasn't really a question actually. Tsk, tsk...
Vintage, kids. It's the only way to go.

Vintage?
I wasn't aware that this was a vintage design... I thought this was an exclusive Modernica design.

The packages shipped directly...
The packages shipped directly from Modernica so there's no chance that the dealer meddled with their own products. You're right, I should go directly to Modernica and see what the deal is.

Not Modernica exclusive, sorry
It's in the Eames "Black Book", p. 153. Designed circa 1953 (and Made in USA).

I think
Modernica should come out with an Eames barstool rocker base.

anabelle...
You're not doing yourself or Moderncontentious any favors here.
My point was that I have no use for either of you, with so much great vintage design about.
What does it matter where a knockoff is produced? Does US made mean any less fake?

I am by no means an expert...
I am by no means an expert in mcm design and am not the richest person in the world...but I see no point in buying new reproduction furniture when I could have the real thing...just seems silly to invest in reproduction...it is only ever going to depreciate in value...

it seems overpriced and most of those chairs look fairly cheap (in my opinion)

i have been around a long ...
i have been around a long time in the mcm world, nothing the matter with modernica in general, some of the stuff is not that good , I have recovered about 10 of the chairs cause the customers did not like the way the fiberglass looked. after several months and wanted a nice fabric on the chair. ,
For something not made by Herman miller they do a ok job. knocking off the fiberglass chair in the year 2011 since Miller gave the fiberglass look up over 20 years ago and only does PCP plastics and by the way are doing fantastic with them for home use in about 6 colors. and the effiel base and dowel leg base.
i have issues with some of the sales people at Modernica.not knowing what they have or knowing what parts they have. . the girl that runs modern conscious trys really hard to please the customer. something Modernica use to do.

the_beloved... Your reference is greatly appreciated. I had no idea- obviously. Thank you for that.
Modernica has gotten back to me and confirmed that the parts for their reproduction bases are made in China and then assembled in their shop in LA.
