Hi Guys,

Firstly I'm not here to open up the Modernica authenticity debate! Just wanting some advice on the Shell colours they offer. I'm all the way in the North of England, so as much as I'd like to own a vintage HM Shell, they're pretty hard to come by and since I'm not a fan of the polyprop Vitra versions (own a Tom Vac in polyprop), Modernica seems like my best bet. I also love the Low Rod base.

So which of the Modernica colours have the most resemblance to the orignal colourways? All I have to go on is a colour chart sent to me by Modernica and not sure how accurate it is. I'm after something that has a vintage feel.

I appreciate beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I just want to get some general feedback from those that have seen the chairs in the flesh.

Thanks all

OP.

Most
Of the modernica colors have a similar HM counterpart, except for their Pink (too light), Ocean, Celery, and White.

I think there's one called...
I think there's one called Mustard that I love - the murky yellow ... and Terra Cotta is good.

Mustard
Is a very nice color and it's close to HM's Ochre Dark, which is pretty hard to find.

Great
Thanks guys.
The Mustard was the colour I was immediately drawn to so I'll probably go with that.
While I've got you, have any of you had a good sit in the low rod chair? What are your thoughts? Comfy? (as much a a hard shell chair can be anyway)
Did HM every manufacture this base? I've seen one or two pop up on ebay with original seats and they weren't modernica ones.
Cheers!

Go vintage
I hate to sound like a broken record, but why not buy vintage? At least the shell. I know that vintage chairs with original cat's cradle bases are pretty hard to come by and bring a premium. If you need to marry a new base to your vintage chair, that's fine. But surely you can get a vintage shell in a nice color for the same money. Hell, I can set you up with one if need be. I'll even put a good quality reproduction cat's cradle (low rod) base on it for you. I have a couple vintage H.M. arm shells in good condition so you can pick between the colors (one is mustard, one is parchment). You can have a vintage Eames armshell on a new low rod base for the same money. Just let me know if you'd prefer vintage if it cost the same.

The
problem is that armshells, though readily avaiable in the US, are much more difficult to come by in the UK, so International shipping usually puts the price up prohibitively.
I'm not sure what the deal is with Modernica and shipping though- I see they offer economical shipping to Japan, but no mention of the UK ??

Well...
...yes i'd much prefer to buy vintage but as the above poster said, in the uk, there aint many around. The one's that are end up sitting, overpriced, in some bloody vintage store on the Portabello road.
Pegboard ModernCan, if you can do a mustard shell on the low base inc shipping for the same price I'd certainly consider it. Feel free to send me a price/pics to the email below:

Someone's just beat me to it but yeah I was going to order through SCP, if they do the colour I want.
Cheers for the responses guys.

Low Rod
Is very low. I've got one and I love it, but if you've got any guests with bad knees they probably wont be able to negotiate getting in and out of the chair.
Also - even people with good knees tend to use their arms on the armrests of the chair - exerting a lot of pressure. You might want to keep an eye on your heavier friends.
And lastly - the Modernica cats cradle is decent compared to the original - there's a guy on eBay who sells just crap versions - the angle is ALL wrong and the craftsmanship is shoddy as hell.

Sod the guests..
...it's my birthday and I'll buy if I want to!
I only have about a foot on a smurf anyways so it being low aint a problem.
Thanks for letting me know.

Like everyone else
I had resisted the non-fiberglass Herman Miller and Vitra Eames shells, but I got the chance to buy (on eBay) a Vitra mid-blue side chair with the eiffel base and I love it.
It's really beautiful, comfortable and is perfect for my George Nelson typewriting desk.

Low Rod
I agree, the low rod base is quite comfortable for lounging and reading. It is similar to the LCW but with a bit less recline.
