Could it be DWR false advertising???
Recently purchased throw pillows from DWR that are supposedly filled with "goose down & feather", however, the odor from the pillow inserts is tremendous. I have heard that goose down does not smell but that duck definitely has an unpleasant odor.
We very much like the design of these pillows, very zen like. However, they are expensive pillows and the odor is very annoying and unpleasant.
Anyone here heard of these issues w/DWR?
I brought this issue to the attention of the California regional manager regarding the odor and the possibility of false advertising. I explained the insert pillow label does "Not" specify "goose"... the label is very vague.
He said he'd pass the photo of the label onto the buyer and would keep me informed. I inquired via email & phone but he's totally dropped the ball on it. I think it should be investigated as in Canada, they have a designated company that tests the authenticity of down & feather products.
Perhaps the perception is, it's just one person so why bother!
We know "goose" down is a selling point as it's considered premier.
Thanks for listening to my 2 cents.
I would check where the...
I would check where the product is made and then see what their regulations are in regards to the filling. I only buy products made from local ingredients because some countries use toxic processes or inferior ingredients.
There is usually a good reason for a product being cheap, so buyer beware.
Good luck with your search.
American down & feather Inc,
American down & feather Inc, is the manufacturer, Tick.
It is made in the United States. I recently read on the Canada link regarding down /feather that the proper cleaning process of the materials do make a difference in the smell as well.
I have noticed down products from department stores where the label states sanitized, perhaps the process of cleaning could be crucial too.
I will attempt to inquire with the manufacturer of the down. Hopefully I'll be successful as sometimes it can be difficult in finding a contact number, etc.
Anyway, thanks for your reply.
Pillow insert
It sounds like, you have a blend which is listed as down/feather. You mentioned an insert. These things wash easily in the machine on a gentle cycle. I use a cold setting and then toss in the dryer with a tennis ball which helps keep the feathers from clumping. I have a small resort here in western Washington and all cottages have down pillows. I wash them twice a year and everything comes out beautifully.
Hazelnut regardless of
Hazelnut, regardless of washing the down pillow insert in a washing machine it will not remove the odor. They are throw pillows and even with a linen cover the smell still permeates through. The biggest point is that DWR advertised these pillows as "Goose" down and feather and it's questionable whether it is true.
Thanks for your post.
And, the label says....
Hi Norm, the label says... 10% down cluster, and 90% feather!!
It doesn't state "Goose" anywhere, in fact it does not even mention what kind of down or feather it contains at all.
These details should be clarified according to the Department of Consumer Affairs. I suppose there is the possibility that it contains goose down but as I mentioned it should be labeled as such.
I plan to research it a bit further. I am a bit of a consumer advocate I must say so the issue goes beyond myself.
Thanks for posting.
label incomplete...
Norm, Here is a quick clarification for you.
You posted, if the label says its goose down ...
The label does not state "Goose"! My questioning of the contents is due to the advertisement of the product by Design Within Reach.
Online and in their catalogues these products are specified as "Goose Down" !
But the labels do not specify as such. Thanks.
