Rand McNally Earth Globe
JeffB,
In all eranest I suggest the Rand McNally Earth Globe. Several years ago Rand McNally sold the molds for the Earth Globe to an exhibet company. They are stiil in business and make both the Erath Globe and the Moon Globe. You may remember this icon from the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". There is an Earth Globe at the University of Toledo (the axis motorized mount on this globe has a 1970's modern look). This is definately on my list of acquisitions.
May I also recommend the Questar 50th anniversay 3.5 telescope for additional outdoor fun. A Zeiss Victory 85mm Spotting Scope is a less costly alternative, although it is primarily designed for birding or nature oriented viewing as opposed to celestial.
Enjoy!
deco
I have a vintage one from the 1930's or 40's with a very deco base. I have seen others with a chrome deco base available in reproduction. I do think the ones with black oceans rather than blue have a more modern look. I believe I have seen a black globe with a deco base available.
That one's made by Trippensee--
at the totally-affordable price of $89.95, now that I looked.
The older ones go for a LOT more, though.

AtmoSphere
makes a nice modern globe called the Full Circle. It's available in multiple colors (oceans colored red, black, mint, amethyst, etc., and bases of wood, black rubber, or aluminum). DWR is the exclusive distributor of the mint/aluminum one, so it's unfortunately a little more expensive than the others.
