I finally got round to reupholstering my Hvidt sofas in a grey tweed.
They were previously mismatched and the larger of the two had definitely seen better days.
I stripped them down, repadded them - basting the wadding to the existing sprung cushions.
I made up the box covers on three sides, and edge stitched one side of the seam, then hand sewed the open side when they were in place.
I did this instead of using zippers because I was fearful the cushions wouldn't give enough to get them inside with zippers, and it gave me a little bit of flexibility on the fit.
I now have sore fingers, but am really pleased with how they look!
very impressive work robert
As a kid I watched my mother upholster various chairs and sofas, and I saw enough to know how difficult it is. (Sheetrock and installing floors are easy when compared to doing your own upholstery!)
I have great respect for anyone who can get results like this. These are SO beautiful. Congratulations!
Ooo, nice work!!
You can slip a thin plastic bag over a cushion to make getting the cover on more easily but then it can be a pain to get the plastic back out. (I have done pieces where the previous upholsterer left the plastic in place--nice touch. Not.) You have to reach in their and just tug and tear until it all comes out. Dry cleaner bags are about the right weight. Anything that is very easy to tear works.
PS - dark gray fabric and teak is SO handsome. Nice choice.
