Hello ,
A few weeks ago i bought the mr side chair . This chair was a display model in the knoll's previous partner store in greece and i know that it is 100% percent authentic as it has the knoll studio stamp on base also it has a sticker with serial code and certificate of authenticity but i am not sure for one thing.
Under the seat there is a curved metal tubular bar that joins the two sides of the chair . This metal bar is not stable . Is that normal? I know that all mrs have this metal bar but i used to think that this metal bar was stable .
Apart from that i would like to know the reason of the existence of this bar .
I can see a similar flat bar under the barcelona couch but it is screwed an stable
also the tugenhdhat chair has two and i know that the first one is screwed and stable. So.. what happens with the MR collection ?
I thought that this bar was stable and was used to help the chair not to loose its shape.
What do you guys think?
Thanks
bar on mr chair
When one sits on an mr chair, the leather sling gives a bit and therefore puts a downward force on the sling; and, the downward force of the sling pulls the chair legs inward. The heavier the person sitting on the chair...the more the
inward pull on the legs. The bar is there to maintain the correct distance between the legs when this force is exerted.
There is a built-in tension in the legs that pulls the legs together a bit without the bar in place. In fact, to put the bar into place between the legs, one must pull, quite forcefully, to spread the legs far enough apart to put the bar into place. A job best done with two people...personal experience here in replacing the slings on two of my six mr chairs.
I certainly cannot say why the bar on your chair is loose. I can say that I have owned two of my six mr chairs for 20 years and the other four for only 4 years. The frames on the
newer chairs are not as accurately bent, as the older chairs. This is a result of Knoll, over the years, having different,out-sourced manufacturers of the steel frames of the mr chair. If your chair is a mewly manufactured one, it could be that the frame is not accurately built with the correct inward tension on the legs. If the bar on your chair is not loose when you are sitting on the chair, I would not worry about it. If the frame of your chair looks deformed, I would return the chair and get my money back.
Hope this helps.
