I occasionally come across vintage stereo cabinets from the 50's and 60's, the ones that look like a credenza or buffet with the 2 speakers on the 2 ends. Sometime it's missing the needle which makes me reluctant to buy. Here comes a very stupid question since I know nothing about electronics, can you easily replace a missing needle on one of these vintage stereo systems? I have no idea if each company made their own or it's all universal. The one that I saw the other day was called a Silvertone Medalist, if that sounds familiar to anyone.
Thanks

No, its usually not easy to replace the stylus/needle on consoles.
Occasionaly youll find a console with an adapted standalone turntable which, if youre lucky has replacement parts available online. Unfortunately, most consoles use obsolete hardware and are nearly impossible to restore.
That said, most of these consoles use cheap components and from a performance point of view, sound like absolute shit anyways.
online stylus supplier
Hi there - we have a mid-century store in Melbourne Australia, and have had great success in finding replacement needles (& other parts) for vintage stereo systems we sell from an online supplier called Soundring. They have a decent catalog on their site, and are also pretty good at identifying/finding what you're looking for if you send them a photo of the old stylus or cartridge. Good luck!
