learning a lot more than i kn...
learning a lot more than i knew before so thanks for the comments. the store it came from opened in the late 1960's and ceased trading in the early 1980's. several floors of high-end furnishings remained in storage. some Heal's fabrics were sold, I could approach them with one label I have in order to date the label. that's a thought I could follow the Heal's lead. Thanks.

size and quality
Shovel, the size is about 12ft x 8ft. about this incising. there are what look like weaving gaps rather than any cutting, between the squares of about 5mm, (excuse the mixed measurement mediums, this is ol'england) definitely not the 'chinese' bevelling mentioned above. Also may I ask how would you recommend the carpet be cleaned? it was down in the store that closed in 1980, so although not used it has accumulated a lot of dust in thirty years! Have vacuumed it for several hours but it looks like some kind of soapiness could bring up the colour and treat the wool at the same time.

Without seeing the rug
it is difficult to determine the "gap" issue. This rug needs to be steam cleaned. Be sure the company is expert in steam cleaning. A good company will guarantee good results. The key is to remove 97% of all the water in the steaming process. You will need someone that will guarantee you that the colors will not bleed. The other option is "dry clean". Looking at your rug I think you will get better results with steam. You just need to be sure the company is qualified as an expert in steam cleaning rugs.
PS Find you a commercial vc first. The regular vc is probably not doing the job.

Keep on at it!
thanks for the cleaning advice. I think the carpet deserves the professional touch. have just found an image in Decorative Art 1960-61 Vol. 50,p.68 (Studio Books) of a very similar, though simpler square patterned carpet described as "close woven Indian wool carpet, designed and made by Heal's of London" , Heal's is one of, if not, the best furniture store in London that's been trading for over two hundred years. Now i'm not suggesting my carpet is two hundred years old! but it probably is fifty years old. having kept on at this thread of a couple of days I think I'm... almost... satisfied that a trace has been found. So thanks again Shovel and you guys.
