I recently bought a lovely, mid-century flatware set that I cannot use because it has a metallic/electric taste when it touches my tongue, similar to the sensation of touching one's tongue to a battery.

Does anyone know what causes this metallic taste, and can it be fixed?

The flatware is forged stainless from Japan.

metallic taste could be from some type of cleaner/polish used by previous owner/seller. Have you tried a really thorough wash/rinse in really hot/near boiling water?

Not yet, but I'll try that tonight. I love the flatware, but of course a metallic tasting fork spoils even the best meal.

When did you last see your dentist? It could be related to cavities. At 35, I've only had two cavities in thus far. Both times a strange subtle metallic taste was evident prior to them being filled.

Mr. Happy Tooth
I saw him a couple of months ago. No other flatware causes this problem, just this great mid-century set I recently bought off e-bay. Maybe the seller polished it and that's what I'm tasting.

If hand washing or automatic dishwashing doesn't fix the problem
then I'm afraid nothing will. Can they be returned, if neither of the above works?

Problem solved
As jesgord suggested, I boiled the flatware which removed the metallic taste. So, I'm assuming the taste was from polish, not the metal. Thanks for the good advice! Fabulous flatware set saved.
