I have a 6-drawer dresser & low table set, in the blond finish, and recently acquired a side table with a badly distressed finish in the color I'll call honey.
I want to refinish the table to match with the other pieces.
Looking around online I can find surprisingly little info about the original Planner Group finishes--can anybody offer me any tips?

Whoops!
Found the earlier thread with straylight's helpful post.
ok, then, so to approximate the original 1950 "Natural" finish, any thoughts?

Sherwin Williams
You should be able to take it into Sherwin Williams and they might be able to help you match the color.

Refinishing a McCobb Planner table
Hello, all:
Bought a beautiful McCobb planner table in November at Edgewater Antique Mall in Chicago. It has some staining from where there were placemats before and from water damage.
I'd like to refinish it myself. Any thoughts on this? I don't know quite where to begin; I've scoured the internet for advice and can't seem to find a conclusive starting point.
I don't know what kind of wood it is - maple? - or the original finish. I'd also like to add a coat of lacquer.
Any and all advice is appreciated. If you'd like an image, I can post one later.
Thanks and best -
Christy Ramon

Start with...
I love refinishing McCobb pieces. I'm not an expert at it, but his stuff his my favorite to work on. I would start with using Howard's first. It may save you from having to strip and refinish. You can always refinish if you aren't happy with the way it comes out after that. But for $10 it is worth trying.

And yes
If it is a Planner Group piece, it is probably birch or maple. I like to use a preconditioner on these woods because they can come out blotchy because of the inconsistancies of the wood density. My personal favorite color is the Minwax Gunstock color for the tabacco colored pieces. Cabot makes a dark walnut color that is matches pretty well for darker pieces.
