Today I found an original vintage clock which for all the world looks like a Nelson. I would LOVE to own an original Nelson clock, and the dealer felt confident it is Nelson. It certainly looked like it, and the tarnished back plate and electric cord were consistent with the age. But the tag was missing. I didnt buy it, although I did buy a Planer Group Mccobb desk (with the label). 🙂

So, I was wondering what products you all consider to not nessesitate the label to verify authenticity? In other words...products that are so distinctive and non-replicated that labels are not necessary.

Thanks!

You don't require labels to prove authenticity if
you are seasoned collector. This type of expertise to quickly discern the real thing from fakes comes from research and experience.

That's why I don't understand
why people feel the need to put labels on unmarked furniture.
I also dislike seeing people selling labels on eBay.

To say nothing, of how
Bourgeois it comes across. 🙂
If you like it and or love it, buy it. This clock mounted on your wall 25 years from now, label or not, I believe it wouldn't or at least shouldn't have increased, nor diminished your enjoyment of the clock through the preceding 25 years.

the table i bought 2 weeks ...
the table i bought 2 weeks ago and redid did not have a Evans products, distributed by Herman miller lable on it , but any collector that has read or been around vintage items knew what it is, and it deserved to be jumped on cause of the great price.
I bought it from a dealer who bought it from a picker who paid 10.00 for it he could have cared less what it said.
So summing it up years of experience pays off every time label or no label.

If I were you, I wouldn't...
If I were you, I wouldn't ever pass up a vintage Nelson clock that I wanted badly over a label. Hope it wasn't a great price ... that would really be a shame.

point taken
Of course I would buy something I like regardless of label...
But as a novice collector, I am leery of purchasing without the label. I just dont know enough about the designers to feel confident. If money was no object, than I would buy regardless.
As far as the clock is concerned...I liked it, but didnt love it. I would love to own a Nelson vintage clock, but I would want the label to prove it...unless the ball clock design is characteristic of Nelson and the label isnt necessary? If I could be guarnateed it was a Nelson, than I would buy it. The price didnt make it worth taking a chance for me otherwise.

Rockybird...if you're a novice, then I suggest
you invest in some good reference books.
They certainly helped me an awful lot.

Well we are all hoping that Barry and Lloyd come out with a book of their own.
Until then I would suggest taking a look at the 6 separate threads labeled Nelson Clocks and More Nelson Clocks. There already exists in these threads an awesome amount of scholarship in no small part due to Barry and Lloyd's passion and excellent resources and personal collections.
