For over 10 years, I was the proud owner of a table that was octogan-shaped and had a clear lucite overlay over what looked like gold and silver glitter, abalone shell, and bits of marble. The back of the tabletop looked like a thin layer of cement, but I later found out was actually made of tiny shells all smashed together to make concrete.

About 2 days ago, the table fell and smashed into pieces, and I have no clue as to what style this table is to begin a search for a new one. I took a piece of it to several shops that specialize in midcentury mod furnishings and everyone knew what it was but NOBODY knew what style this was called, or had any currently for sale. Even Ebay let me down.

Can any of you gurus help me out with an ID? Apparently these things were very popular in the 60s, and the lucite even came in different colors like blue and green. I'm absolutely heartbroken over this.

I am
sorry for your loss. It sounds like a spectacular table.
While searching for a duplicate replacement, you might also come to the point of accepting that life has given you an opportunity to move on ? Few people replace a worn-out car with the exact same model; even those who suddenly lose their auto in an accident often make use of this unexpected calamity to choose a different vehicle for the next phase of their life.
I hope this does not strike you as callous or unfeeling. . .
Cementitious materials can often be glued back together, if all the pieces are present ?

sorry
i don't know what this is, but i would suggest trying to find a photograph you might have taken that has it in there. it's going to be very difficult for someone to ID with no photo.
it doesn't sound like any particular design/manufacturer that i know of. i hate to say it but you just may have to move on to the next great coffee table. there are man, many great designs out there.
maybe you should buy the book that i linked to below and start anew. look through the book for table inspiration perhaps? maybe your table or one similar will be in there?

Thanks guys!
No, you didn't come across as being unfeeling at all. I know that finding one exactly like it would be a crapshoot...that's why I'm looking for something in that similiar style.
The closest example that I can give you is this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6623217010&ssPag...
but instead of it being an end table, imagine it a full dinette table. That's what I lost. T_T

Abalone table
Sorry to hear about your mishap. I have a round abolone table that sounds exactly like the one you were describing, I have a mid-century modern table that was made by Wondermold in the late fifties or early sixties. The company is in Indiana, USA. The table is 18 in. tall, stands on three screw in legs. The table top is 18 in. wide., 1 in. thick with over 100 2 in.abalone shells. It has a 2 in. crack in the lucite that you can't feel or hardly see. If you are interested you can email me at blenko03@comcast.net, or you can call me, I ive in Hebron,Ct. My phone number is 860-530-1071, Call any time.
We woke up to 2 ft. of snow this morning, hope it is warm where you are. Thanks, Cheryl

heartfelt
I can understand your loss. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe you should take advantage of your lose and waste your weekends away looking for the perfect replacement.
I bought an old truss a while ago and made it into a coffee table. I found the perfect 1" piece of glass with the EXACT proportion as the truss. Two weeks ago a good friend came in for Mardi Gras and after he broke my mannequin, he feel against the glass of the my coffee table and somehow it broke. I stopped sitting on my couch because I don't have a coffee table.
Have fun finding a replacement.
